Why do people feel the need to waste space with this? Can’t you just e-mail your buddies and leave it at that?

It’s not wasting the space so much as it is a way of attracting attention to oneself. I have taken numerous sabbaticals from this message board and have never felt the need to announce them beforehand. If I decide to leave for a short time, I’m gone.
I’m gonna be in the pooper for the next 20 minutes. Don’t do anything exciting until I get back.
Well, sometimes there are two things at play:

A person may have way too many friends and acquaintences, and feel overwhelmed about explaining they are leaving to every single one of them, and worry about leaving someone out on accident.

Sometimes, there are a lot of people who will wonder where you went, that you didn’t even know gave a shit. When IRL harassment forced me to leave the Board for 2 weeks (when I was “BANNED”, but not really?), I got letters of support and concern from nearly 200 people, about 100 of which I didn’t know looked twice at my posts.
Just let the man say his peace here, and don’t chide him for it, please?
