Ugh.
I love this movie, but I still don't get this line. Does Jack mean now that he decapitated his foe, he is taller (by a head) than Dennis Hopper's character? It just seems like if that’s where they were going with it, he would have said “But NOW I’m taller.” Meaning he’d be referencing the event that just happened (the decapitation). If he did mean “now I’m taller” it would make sense, but “I’m taller” implies that Howard may be smarter but Jack’s height was always the more advantageous characteristic, which is really a weird thing when it didn’t come into play until this scene…does it even come into play?
To put it another way, Howard Payne keeps saying “I’m smarter than you!” meaning he is referring to an intrinsic quality that always has been the case. Howard has always been smarter than Jack, and this is the latest example. But if Jack responds “I’m taller” he seems to imply that Jack’s height gave him the advantage in their most recent interaction. But if Jack was taller, and in Howard’s place, it would have been impossible for him to survive due to the low ceiling and incoming light.
I’m so confused. This has bothered me for a long time. I’ve had to do mental gymnastics to try and understand what the hell Jack is saying.
If we take out the corniness and awesomeness of this line, is there any sense to be made of this statement from a practical point of view?
