I’d only find that funny if it read “Rudolph”. Although, on the other hand, since Rudolph is not a real reindeer, like the others, it wouldn’t make sense.

And I keep wondering if this wasn’t a stunt dreamed up by a fundamentalist church in 2000–as a way to kill off the commercialization of Christmas once and for all.

And that is one ugly tombstone–I’d roll in my grave if it were mine. Perhaps the kid is crying because he heard Santa from the grave saying he’s coming to get whoever gave him the monument!
WAG as to the 1836 – because it features in some of the St. Nick folklore (Alabama making Christmas as legal holiday that year) or the Photoshop user mucked things up by reversing the year Thomas Nast apparently started his Harper’s Weekly illustrations of Santa - 1863.
And WAG as to the 2000 – because perhaps that’s how old the pic is.
I am being fair. It was an intro to the Snopes thread link, from 2002, discussing the same pic. And where they appreciated it just as much as you folks.
I laughed my arse off (and had to go get it, that made for a very interesting chase at the library…) Am I going to be a bad mother now?
