So I recently got Windows 7. Unless I’m mistaken, it doesn’t allow you to place folders, files and images in the order you want within a folder. As in, you can’t drag and drop one picture anywhere you want within the folder, you have to rename it to make change its position. This is inconvenient.
Does anyone know some, preferably free, software that would have features Microsoft considers too advanced like drag and drop?
If the inability to drag and drop icons is a feature that can be turned off, please tell me. I know it can be turned off on the desktop but I don’t seem to be able to do it within folders.
I haven’t messed with Win7 much, but I think you can right-click in the folder and then change the “arrange icons by…” setting. Make sure “Auto Arrange” is not checked.
What you probably want is an alternative to windows explorer. Check out download.com and when you do your search, specify a license type of “freeware” rather than shareware or commercial.
One of the best in the category supposedly is Directory Opus which you can try for free but is a bit pricey. I don’t know what options it gives you.
Also look at ACDSee’s Photo Manager 12 or Photo Manager 3 Pro. I haven’t been able yet to figure out exactly how they differ except the latter is supposed to be geared to the pro photographer so if anything has the sort of features you want, it would be a software package like this. Again, I think you can try it for free, but it’s not cheap software.
