For some reason, whenever I go to save a jpg on IE, it only saves as a bitmap. (Occasionally it will do this to gifs, too). The only way I can save some pictures is by “Save Target As”.
I heard that to correct this problem, one should delete cookies and files through Tools and Internet Options. However, when I go to “Delete Files” under options, the window freezes, and then I get a “Not Responding.”
And even after I got rid of my cookies, only a little while later, it’s doing this AGAIN!
What gives and how can I fix this? This is ridiculous!
I’ve heard that clearing the cache and deleting temp internet files can solve a lot of IE problems. Why is this? How does a full cache and temporary internet files folder screw up IE like that?
I have read online that deleting the temporary internet files will cure this problem. I have read in the local newspaper that to fix it you need to uninstall and then reinstall IE and all the browser plugins (-you don’t need to download anything to reinstall IE, apparently it is now included in the system file archives-) but if you do the uninstall-and-reinstall route, then you have to re-update the browser as well. Not real practical if you’re on a phone line.
Also note that you can go into the individual cache folders (they will have odd “random-strings-of-letters-and-numbers” names) and delete files by hand–it is safe to do, and allows you to verify that they are all gone. Leave the folders, just delete the files inside. Also don’t delete them all at once–select like 100 or so at a time to prevent your machine from locking up–which they can do if you tell it to delete hundreds of files at once (I think IE creates another new cache folder after 800 or so files).
Or just use another browser. This isn’t always practical I know, but do keep in mind that as far as home-use is concerned, no other browser seems to have the problems that IE does…

Yeah, but how quickly should the cache fill up? Is there any way to set it so it takes a while?
Because it seems like I’m emptying it out twice a freaking DAY! And each time, it freezes, (it still empties, though), etc.
Yeah, I’m on dial up so an uninstall, reinstall, like you said, wouldn’t be very practical!
