You forgot “Agree with them – strongly”
Sadly I can not edit the poll.
Which “negative generalizations about their gender” are we talking about?
That is a generic question about all generalizations. I do not know which examples would be best.
well, generalizations are usually wrong so everyone should be opposed to them.
For example, are men disgusted with periods? I suspect most men know nothing about periods and are not disgusted by them, but certainly some may be and some may not be.
However, this person seems to trying to broach the topic that rape is a men’s problem and is approaching it quite poorly.
Definitely – making generalizations about any birth group should not be well received.
She’s proposing a good message but using poor methods and bad writing to try to pull it off. If you want to criticize her, criticize her methods. If you want to support her, do the same but more gently.
I am disgusted by periods! Why else would I look for other ways to end my sentences?
This. Absolutely.
Why?
Because it’s hard to argue with the sentiments expressed (at least those shown in the story).
“Rapists rape people, not outfits.” Check back if the message here is not clear to you.
That message did not generate controversy.
“Imagine if men were as disgusted with rape as they are with periods.”
Convicted rapists already go to prison for years, and women with periods do not. What is the preferred alternative for rapists? Castration? The electric chair? Lynchings?
Wait, men aren’t already more disgusted with rape (you know a heinous crime in pretty much every place on earth) than with bodily functions.
Yeah, based on the Buzzfeed story, this woman’s publicity stunt is both dumb and disgusting. As for the poll, would seem like a good option.
That has nothing to do with the question in the poll. That’s not a negative generalization about the male gender.
The one that is being used is the one that men apparently are more disgusted by periods than rape. The only agreement I would do with that is sarcastic. Most men find rape so disgusting that they get all defensive when they think someone is accusing them of it.
Making up strawmen to debunk them is not a good method of activism.
I’m not sure there’s a general answer to how men should deal with generalisations about their gender. It depends on the context and intent, and what one can reasonably expect to achieve in the conversation.
What is the intent of the person described in the link in the OP? Could be trolling - in which case, ignore. Could be serious, but completely unreasonable, in which case maybe publish a response, but don’t try to engage in argument. Could be just trying to make a point, but badly, in which case it may be worth debating.
I guess I read the statement and just sort of shrug. I’ve dealt with periods before in various ways but I haven’t ever raped anyone so it’s kind of like saying “Imagine if you were as disgusted with torture as you are with trees”.
I can’t even muster outrage or offense. It’s just sort of a nonsensical statement.
I do not believe there should be a generalized “correct” response by men to generalizations about their gender.
I do believe that in general, people should avoid making generalizations about others, and that it is a capital error to continue to only rely on generalizations when dealing with individuals.
