“Imagine if men were as disgusted with rape as they are with periods.”

I think generalizations are the only way to analyze the world we live in. You should avoid assumptions about individuals based on generalizations, but I think it’s perfectly fine to generalize when talking about groups, as long as the generalization is based on data and not just stereotypes.

But men finding rape less disgusting than periods? Um, no, I think that one’s sloppy. WOMEN are disgusted with periods in my experience, men are cool with vaginas in all states more often than not.

Shouldn’t she have used red ink?

Overall I give this a big “Meh.” The answer to virtually all of her questions is “The vast majority of men in your country already conform to your views.”

Ignore and move on, not worth engaging someone who already has their mind made up. They are entitled to their opinions but not sure they are entitled to paste pads everywhere to spread them. Should men be able to hang jock straps with pro-men messages?

Interesting that her stated goal is to spread the message that “feminism means equality, not men hate.” Asserting that men are largely untroubled by rape seems, well, hostile.

First of all, I’m just confused by the stunt in the OP. Is it about rape, or about periods? There’s too much information for me, I guess.

Now, are men disgusted by periods? Well, we say no, but then, when women talk about something period-related, we leave the room. So what’s going on?

I had a very interesting conversation about this recently.

For me: No, it turns out that it’s not about grossness or disgust. But it might be misunderstood as that. Maybe there’s a common misunderstanding going on. However, it is still about me being sexist. It has to do with the fact that the vagina is a private thing, while the penis is a public thing. I mean, traditionally. The fix for that is probably to saturate society with all things period- and vagina-related, until we get used to it. So that I’m all for. But accusing me of digging rape, while you’re doing that? Well… as I said, too much information for me, at least, to deal with at once.

As a result of that conversation I linked to, BTW, (which was just about periods, not rapes) I am now able to appreciate period-related jokes.

So you posted this in IMHO but have no opinion of your own? Or none you wish to share?

Hmmm… so if I was as disgusted with rape as with periods… Then I would be curious about something I had little experience with, but afraid to talk about it because women are too embarrassed to discuss it?

On the issue of generalizations: with any generalization, I try to think about how it applies to most people in general and to me specifically, but most of these simple sayings are either not really true, or true only with a certain interpretation.

This particular generalization suggests that men are OK with rape, and clearly that’s not true. Even in the worst, most exaggerated rape-culture kinds of statistics, a small minority of men are doing the raping. Maybe it would be better to write “Imagine if 5% of men were like the other 95%” but that’s not exactly fitting her world view.

This “activist” should be arrested for littering and her methods are stupid. Probably because, just like with driving, she is a dumb person.

Maybe next she can raise awareness about obesity by writing “imagine if fat people found exercise as delicious as they do French fries” on a wad of used toilet paper.

Gah, I should have known from the subject matter that this is the kind of stupidity that Buzzfeed would eat right up.

Ignoring her is the right answer.

If the solution to her proposed problem is as childish and ineffective as her methods for awareness, then I don’t want to listen to her dumb ass anyway

There’d probably be a lot more rape. Dozy cow.

I’m disgusted with littering.

I do not know. If anyone publicly made generalizations about women or an ethnic/racial group they would be attacked relentlessly.

There is a strong belief in some Feminist and Social Justice circles that men and other “privileged” groups should accept any hate in their direction without complaining.

Many parts of Social Justice ideology are very subtle. The idea that men and other “privileged” groups should accept any negative generalizations or hate in their direction is something I disagree with.

The quote I posted refers to the habit of blaming the rape victim by asserting that she was “asking for it” by dressing provocatively (however you define provocative). The implication is that this view is widespread among many men, not just rapists.

I understood the poll and OP to be about the entire campaign, not just the quote in the title.

Who said “that men and other ‘privileged’ groups should accept any negative generalizations or hate in their direction”?

Oh, he’s just mansplaining.

This is Social Justice 101 – actually hundreds of articles claim that hate against the privileged oppressors is no big deal.

No, it’s possible to be a troll, a raving idiot or a misguided fool in those contexts too, and be treated accordingly.
