I understand that imap is ‘better’ then pop3 but what’s the dif.
I signed up for a email service and noticed (after signing up) that is it imap instead of pop3. It creates it’s own folder and seems to suffer a time delay between clicking on the folder and reading the mail. What’s better about it?
also (Re: imap) deleted mail is shown crossed off instead of in a deleted recyc. bin - how do I total get rid of it or get it into the recycling bin?
“Better”? Depends on what you mean.
The essential difference is that POP mail is downloaded from the server onto your hard drive. IMAP mail remains on the server.
The advantage of IMAP is that you can read old messages from more than one location. Old messages in POP mail are only on your computer. Also, older POP mail readers tended to download everything from the server, though now you have a choice (though the default on any mail software is to suck it all down at once – you should change that). I keep my POP mail on the server for three days, for instance.
In IMAP, you need to expunge deleted messages. That’s just a safety feature akin to the Recycle bin – it lets you change your mind. Look for an “expunge” command or button to get rid of things permanently.
