Imbecilic Olympic, "controversy."

I’m po’s about the so called “controversy” about the opening ceremonies. I swear some people are just looking for something to faint and clutch their pearls about. Some Christians cannot conceive that they are not being persecuted. The thing in the Olympic ceremony was a bacchanalian celebration. Easy to tell if you noticed the blue guy. It was not a “parody” of the last supper. I swear people see what they want to see and these people wanted a reason to get all offended. Could it be because there were, gasp gay people?!! or worse yet drag queens??? Oh my stars and
garters say it ain’t soo!.

I wasn’t done yet laptop…anyway the fact is that Christianity is the one of the biggest if not the biggest religion in the western world. They rarely, if ever, get picked on, but they think someone is disrespecting them every single day. Maybe they need to get over their persecution complex and grow a tougher hide. Goodness knows everyone else has had to.

It was incredibly offensive to those who accept Papa Smurf as their Lord and Savior.

Guh, never thought of that.

I’ll add, I’m a Christian but some Christians (too many) really have sticks up their asses (probably cross-shaped) and piss me off too.

Christian also here
Not much offends me; I’ve seen a lot.
It was memorable ( I did not watch, I viewed a snippet online).
Much ado about nothing.

It should be readily apparent the God has a great, warped sense of humor and can take a joke in stride Himself.

Sacrilege actually does have meaning for many people, you know. That’s why the Nazis made Jews spit on the Torah.

I didn’t really watch it, but I could tell that it was going to be very offensive to some millions of people. My thought was, why did they do it? They could have done a thousand other stupid shows, why something like that? I wasn’t exactly offended myself, because I am fairly hardened to tastelessness, as one must be these days, but I knew the reaction was going to be ugly. And so it has been.

I know I won’t get any support on this bastion of atheism, but my point here is that if there was a specific reason millions of people (billions probably) were purposely offended, I wonder what that reason could be.

what is it you think they stole/mocked?

Why be offended by a tableau that was NOT the last supper or anything Christian at all?

She needs to be victim somehow. Look at her posts, it’s her signature style.

Also, why was it, “tasteless?” Was it because there were gay, drag queens, a fat lady?

I barely noticed the Drag Queen last supper or whatever it was. They showed so little of the fashion show in pieces, so I never got the gist.

So much eye candy and moving parts.

I did read most of the Drag Queens were very famous from TV shows and contests .

The internet, Facebook and all that shit can find more stuff to get outraged about. And half only read something someone posted. Not watched to see for their selves.

I noticed some Mississippi TV programmer, (heard the name, but forget it) has pulled its advertising from NBC.
Must be weeping in a backroom in NY.

It’s scarcely a new tactic for Christians.

Even more offensive than this mangling of Smurfish cosmogony?

Stranger

Up Next: The Olympics make fun of Islam to the resounding sound of Christian . . . absolute silence.

The Last Supper is what those Christians who are offended believed was being mocked. Which was kind of obvious, really. Of course for some it was all about homophobia, but not for all.

I don’t think the artists were trying to be offensive. I personally think drag queens are great. I just think it was a big fat error in judgement to put something like that on an international stage which is supposedly about Unity and shit.

Perhaps the “last supper” was in fact a parody of a bacchanalian celebration, since Christians did steal a lot of their iconography from “pagan” religions that came before.

Personally, I think the more offensive mocking was done by those gymnasts, on their rings, who’d regularly parody Jesus on the cross.

no. not that.

because it clearly used that famous da Vinci fresco as a reference.

Yes. But that has been parodied dozens (hundreds) of times. Here are 29 of them in a fun quiz. I don’t remember there ever being backlash.

Cite? You want to feed a bunch of people, you need a long table. You want good camera angles and nobody with their back to the camera, you put everybody on one side of the table. You want somebody to be the focus of attention, you put them in the center.
