“Here” meaning The Internet. Or possibly Planet Earth.
Also note that the Last Supper wasn’t original either. That painting was done somewhere between 1495-1498 CE. Here is one example of an earlier painting done in 1447, a full 50 years earlier.
Right. Leonardo’s is the one everybody thinks of as “The” Last Supper, but he was not the first or only painter to depict the scene.
There was, for example, Michelangelo’s attempt…
If people have taken any offence we are, of course, really, really sorry.
That “apology” rang hollow for me. I’ve found that when anyone says this (IF YOU WERE OFFENDED…) they are not really sorry, because they’re putting the blame on you.
And for the record, I’m not a practicing “Christian,” and I was not offended by the performance because I didn’t see the symbolism that other people obviously imagined. (Some people live for getting their panties in a twist over just about anything.) I did, however, find the performance somewhat ridiculous, not unlike a lot of the opening festivities, which were way over the top and rather boring.
There are millions of practicing Christians in France and millions more who are nominally so but not really active.
The hundreds of people who developed and executed the whole thing no doubt include some as well.
I find it ridiculous that people actually believe they would seek out to deliberately insult so many of their own. It’s just another in a long list of examples of American extremists trying to find any excuse to paint themselves as somehow persecuted.
it did tickle me a bit that their apology took the form of a conference where they all sat in a row behind a long table.

Okay, fine. I’m just interpreting. I really have to stop that…
That’s a good idea. You should also try not jumping to conclusions, reading more history, and stop believing lies that are fed to you by certain media.
Again, watching it would be a baseline prerequisite to forming an opinion about it.
Next you’d want people to read a book before burning it.
C’mon man!
I mean, it’s just the conference setup, but it’s funny that it’s the same sort of lined-up-behind-a-table presentation as The Last Supper

Only if the “Last Supper” were sponsored by the Coca-Cola Corporation. “Drink Coke, the official beverage of the Crucifixion! Peace be onto you, in 12 oz, 20 oz, and the convenient 2 liter size. Coke is it!”

I know I won’t get any support on this bastion of atheism, but my point here is that if there was a specific reason millions of people (billions probably) were purposely offended, I wonder what that reason could be.
“I’d like to place a $5 bet on ‘Willful Ignorance’ please…”

Every time I watch a Congressional hearing, I’m offended at those politicians mocking the Last Supper.
“I’d like to place a $5 bet on ‘Willful Ignorance’ please…”
I’m sorry but you need to frame your response in the form of a question.
Now, who would like to take ‘Performative Outrage’ for $400?

And right-wing Christian marketing.

It is not only Americans condeming it.
In a statement released the day after the Olympic Games' opening ceremony, the French Bishops' Conference praised the "wonderful moments of beauty, joy, and rich emotions," but expressed their thoughts "to Christians worldwide who were hurt by the...

I mean, it’s just the conference setup,…
How dare they mock The Last Supper like that!
It is not only Americans condeming it.
From that article:
In response to requests for explanations, Michaël Aloïsio, spokesperson for the Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee, responded on Saturday, July 27, on Franceinfo: “We stand by our decision to push boundaries.”
I absolutely do not trust that article not to have taken that quote out of context. But in the context that it’s presented there, it sounds like they’re admitting to having staged a mockery of “The Last Supper,” in order to be provocative and edgy and push boundaries.
It is not only Americans condeming it.
True, I forgot that religious extremism has been growing elsewhere as well.
The recent right wing near-win in the French Parliament had that in the background, as well. There’s a renewed push for Catholic “identity” in that crowd that, arguably to a large degree, is Islamophobic/anti-immigrant.
So, I suppose I also forgot we don’t have a monopoly on would-be fascist idiots with persecution complexes.
“Drink Coke, the official beverage of the Crucifixion! Peace be onto you, in 12 oz, 20 oz, and the convenient 2 liter size. Coke is it!”
“Coke adds life.”
I’m in favor of a round-the-clock all access free streaming service that is nothing but drag queens doing all manner of things for him to be outraged about.
Sounds like the RuPaul channel on Roku.
