Well, this is a switch. Normally, all the pit threads are about nazi mods who close too many threads. Tomcat, you may be the first poster I’ve ever seen who complains that they don’t close enough threads.
While I agree with your point that hypothetical drug question threads are far more likely to be closed than hypothetical murder question threads, I strongly disagree that this means the mods need to be more vigilant and close more threads. The criteria the mods use (as I understand it) to close threads regarding illegal activity is simple – could allowing a given thread to remain open attract undesirable attention toward the board and the Chicago Reader? It’s pragmatism, not a pro-violence or anti-drug bias on their part. The simple fact is that in our society drugs receive far more attention than violence, despite being orders of magnitude less harmful. It’s stupid, but this is not the place to try to fix the injustice.
In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with discussing murder or drugs. They are both a part of the society we live in, and ideally I think people should be able to openly discuss anything and everything. However, for purely practical reasons, the mods have to forbid certain discussions on this message board. Trying to make a point by lobbying for further restrictions on what can be discussed is really stupid, in my opinion.

The hell it isn’t! I’m using a dinky 56k modem on a 15" monitor, and if I try to link to one of the cyberporn sites and the SDMB at the same time not only do both sites crawl at a snails pace, but I run the very real risk of alt-tabbing into one of December’s crypto-rightwing political rants at just the wrong moment. Not only would I be scarred for life, but it might screw me up so bad I might start believing that Republicans were sexy! 
Just concentrate on not thinking about what Ann Coulter looks like nake… oh, shit.
