My question is, is there someone in particular we have to thank for it? Some unsung genius, laboring away in an unused toolshed in Cecil’s backyard, emerging flushed and victorious one day, brandishing it triumphantly?
Excel-lent! I hereby move that the words “opinionated wankers” be added after the words “this is also the place for polling” on the main Forums page. Thanks for the suggestion, Android!
I don’t like the new forum… my great thread about the Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer got moved there. What was once a “Great Debate” (and, judging by it’s post count AND the fact that it was in threadspotting, it WAS and still IS a Great Debate, hot dammit!) is now merely a humble opinion… ::sigh::…
But, aside from that, it’s a nifty forum, all right.
I feel your pain, Spoofe, but I feel I should remind you that not everyone in the world considers the rather trivial issue of which starship is the better design to be of world-shaking importance.
That forum has potential, but I think it’s still a bit ill-defined at the moment. Sure, there are plenty of topics related to opinions, humble or otherwise. But I’m wondering if they’re trying too hard to make it appear as though it’s a busy forum by leaving topics there that really should be moved to MPSIMS.
I don’t see how any of those, or any of the replies in them, are asking for or stating OPINIONS on anything. They’re really nothing more than lists of things or mundane, pointless questions with a bunch of varied answers.
But those are all exactly the sort of thing that OUGHT to be in IMHO. It says so right on the main Forums page:
The Gallup poll people do it all the time. They walk around the mall and ask people, “What’s your favorite X?” “What do you think about X?” A poll is, by definition, asking someone his opinion, of asking him to share his thoughts on a subject.
Every single one of those things you listed is a poll.
I think all of those call for opinions and ought to be moved to IMHO, IMHO.
And as far as I can see, the thread about words or phrases you’ve coined at IMHO isn’t a “poll” at all. A “poll” is, “What’s your favorite color?” Or, “Which is better, mayo or Miracle Whip?” I hardly think it’s really a poll to ask how many ways you can think of to call someone a moron. That’s an MPSIMS topic IMHO. The replies are doing nothing more than giving you a list of a whole bunch of ways to call someone a dorkass stupidshit. There’s no “opinion” required in replying to something like that, whereas there IS opinion required when polling about mustard vs ketchup on a hotdog.
Frankly, this all just proves my point that there really isn’t a clear enough delineation between MPSIMS and IMHO.
And for the record, at least one of the thread I linked above has now been moved from IMHO to MPSIMS, so I guess Slythe agreed with me on that one at least.
I’m with you on 3 out of 4 of these. “Asking for advice” is still kind of a “general chatter” thing, I think.
But you’re absolutely right, there is still a foggy boundary between the two forums, but I think it’s getting clearer by the day.
And upon reflection I’ll grant you the “words and phrases” thread, but only because you’re Prom Queen–if you were Chess Club mascot I’d make you sweat for it.
For what it’s worth, I agree with both of you. I agree that the IMHO forum is not well defined, but I don’t see a lot of harm in it’s vagueness. It would be ideal for the delineation to be clear, so as to allow posters not to have their threads moved.
And, in a move that will obviously scream my geekiness for all the world to see, I’ll admit that I was president of our high school Chess Club (I was more proud of the fact that I was one of the better players than I was of the stupid title). We didn’t have a mascot, which would have been nice. But what would really have been a lot nice was to be spared having it read as the CHEESE club by one less than wholly literate student bulletin reader!
