Just wondering if there’s been any suggestion of impeachment of Noem and Bovino, in light of the killings in Minneapolis? And their responses?
I’ve seen calls for their firing.
Is Bovino even in a position where impeachment applies?
I’m watching CNN right now, and this is being discussed, regarding Noem.
Chyron: “Growing calls for Kristi Noem to resign or be impeached.” Sounds like it could become an ultimatum.
Nothing on Bovino, but I thought of this thread as the item came on CNN, and figured I’d toss it out there.
.
Yeah, it’s a thing.
Joaquin Castro and others have been calling for her to be fired. If not, there’s been talk of impeachment.
Noem has already made it clear that she was just following orders (from Steven Miller and Trump, specifically). They’re already making moves to scapegoat her, I don’t know why Democrats are jumping on the bandwagon to help.
Well, one: She really deserves it, even if the rest of them deserve it too. Two: Republicans actually turning on one of their own should be encouraged, even if we know they’re doing it cynically; this maybe makes it easier to impeach the next one in line. Three: They might be able to get her to testify, and maybe she starts telling tales about all the other shit she “Followed orders” to do.
No, Bovino is not the type of civil officer that can be impeached. Neither is Stephen Miller. Only Trump and Noem could be impeached. Basically, outside Pres roles, you have to be Senate confirmed to be removed via impeachment. That’s usually the directors and deputy-directors of the departments that were senate-confirmed (and not temp “acting” directors).
On another note, if you just know this info, you can guess who the scapegoat is most likely to be (Name/How long they’ve been around):
Trump (2016)
Miller (2016)
Noem (2025)
My guess is, the trump admin unceremoniously fires Noem in the next week or so as a sacrificial scapegoat, and they hope that causes the outrage to go away. Miller will stay around as long as trump stays in office.
Trump doesn’t care about what is happening/what he did. Trump only cares about the coverage about what is happening/what he did and how the coverage affects him personally.
He usually will deflect and just start talking about something else, say Greenland or Venezuela or whatever, to change the coverage onto something else. That usually works. This time feels different, so here, to change the coverage, he had to soften his “tone” about what happened, and move Bovino out, etc. The policy is the same, the tactics are unchanged, just trying to change the coverage through smoke and mirrors.
If the coverage goes how it usually does, it’ll move onto something else. I doubt there’s even a need for a scapegoat. It’s hard to tell how the next few weeks or month or so will go. But if there is sustained coverage/political pressure, then my guess would be Noem.
I posted a couple of links about Noem and Miller in the ICE thread.
A couple of Republicans are now calling for Noem and Miller to be impeached, joining Democrats.
Trump in turn has called them “losers”.
NEWSMAX: Trump Blasts GOP Sens. Tillis, Murkowski as ‘Losers’
I used Newsmax as a source because I think it’s telling that even the far-right are reporting on how Trump and other Republicans are feuding over this issue.
Earlier, Pretti’s union called for them to be gone as well (demanding that they resign).
Bovino, of course, was already removed from the situation. There is speculation that he will be gone soon. But the Seattle Times quoted one expert that doesn’t think that will change much of anything, because Stephen Miller is the one behind the escalations.
“I think it’s a grave mistake to think the change in the personnel on the ground constitutes a change in policy,” said Lucas Guttentag, a professor of law at Stanford University who specializes in immigration. “Because the policy remains the same: to terrorize immigrant communities and intimidate peaceful protesters.”
Even if Bovino is ousted or given a lesser role, Guttentag said, national immigration policy is still shaped by Stephen Miller — the White House deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser who has embraced hard-line enforcement tactics.
Very interesting. Thanks all.
They will through her under the bus which is what this admin does. It does not absolve them of there own criminal activities though. But get rid of the puppy killer.
I’m all for shit-canning Noem. Ideally directly into life in prison for premeditated murder.
But spare a thought for what kind of replacement trump & miller will install. Himmler was not an improvement over Rohm.
Impeachment is a meaningless waste of time when there is no chance of a conviction.
Yes. Do not even try to impeach unless you’re assured of removal.
Trying and failing to remove isn’t demonstrating resolve. It’s proving impotence.
I’ve posted that way about Trump, because it’s important not to unnecessarily hand him a win. But I doubt it’s so important to avoid handing a corrupt cabinet member a symbolic victory.
If House Democrats do have enough votes to impeach, and really do need to show progressives they are fighting, it’s important, from a big tent standpoint, that the articles of impeachment go beyond humanitarian concerns. They should consider:
How Firm Tied to Kristi Noem Got Piece of $220 Million DHS Ad Contracts
And:
Buying Luxury Jets with Taxpayer Money
And:
On a technicality, the preferred method of disposal is a wood chipper.
It’s shooting the devil, and missing.
Yeah, I assumed Bovino was in one of those “unceremoniously shit-can” positions that wouldn’t require impeachment.
Did I hear it right that they would remove ICE if Minnesota gave the feds all of their voting records?
That would just give them ammo to threaton and intimidate people even more.
