A Supreme Court seat.
Probably 2. That is UUUUUUUGE!!!
OK. And what do you think that the SCOTUS should do?
Or what do you think Trump supporters will happen?
It seems to me that that is absolutely the #1 reason why evangelical Christians (who, frankly, should have been utterly appalled by Trump) held their noses and voted for him – they believed that a GOP president (who happens to now be Trump) would give them the conservative-leaning Supreme Court that would finally overturn Roe v. Wade (and possibly Obergefell v. Hodges, the same-sex marriage ruling, as well).
Personally, I’d like to see assault weapon bans and magazine capacity restrictions overturned, as well as some of the more restrictive may-issue states’ CCW restrictions struck down.
I expect the next few years will see some advancement of conservative causes on hot-button issues like abortion and religious freedom as well.
OK. Thanks for responding. I vote left, and I own 10 guns (all inherited in one way or another). The gun issue to me re assault weapon bans and mag capacity is silly. Not going to make a difference either way.
Republicans are trying to stop family’s from getting counsel on family planning and birth control by removing funding to Planned Parenthood. How will that help unwanted pregnancies?
Would you like to prevent a woman to get a legal SAFE abortion striked down? Abortion will still happen. Especially with out access to family planning and birth control.
What is your hot button about religious freedom? Is there not enough religious freedom? Or would you prefer it to be your religion?
I did not vote for Trump, and have been swinging between appalled and disgusted at many of the decisions from the West Wing since January 20th.
But I did cheer Trump’s selection of Judge Gorsuch, and I believe that courts should hew to the model of judicial restraint and textualism. These are philosophies Judge Gorsuch seems to wield.
I believe that substantive legal change in a representative democracy like ours should originate from elected legislators, not judges with lifetime appointments. I am pro-life, but if the Supreme Court ruled that abortion was prohibited because unborn children had a Fifth Amendment right to life, I’d be strongly opposed.
Hahahaha. You think I received a phone call from Hillary? At your house? And you don’t want me to look under your bed, or in your closets? Seriously? It’s just a suggestion but proper ventilation is highly recommended when using solvents. just sayin’.
But what you didn’t do was vote for Trump because you wanted Roe v. Wade to be overturned. You didn’t decide that every other moral issue didn’t matter because of abortion. You didn’t decide that incompetence didn’t matter because of abortion.
That’s the issue I have with the so-called “white evangelical Christians” who voted for Trump. It was as if nothing else mattered. They’d vote for Satan himself if he promised to stop abortion.
I actually view you as more of a Christian than some people I’d been friends with for decades–who I met in church.
I think it could be worse than Gorsuch. As good as we could expect. I think a good guy.
Bricker - You state that you are pro-life. What about birth control? Is that a problem for you?
From where I sit, I see many republicans to be pro-birth, not pro-life. I think we should call it what it is.
I apologize for writing a confusing post. The personal hot-button issues for me are gun control (and free speech, like the kind protected in Citizens United, which I suspect is safer on with Gorsuch on the bench than a Clinton appointee).
The references to abortion and religious freedom were an attempt to answer your second question - which admittedly I didn’t fully understand - about what other Trump supporters think will happen.
But - since you asked - I wouldn’t mind seeing Planned Parenthood stripped of all government funding. If they wanted to separate out their abortion business from their counseling on family planning business, I wouldn’t much oppose the latter being eligible for some federal funding. I’d also prefer to see Roe overturned and control over the limitations of abortion returned to the purview of the states. I’d leave it up to the voters and their elected leaders to determine how restricted or accessible abortions should be in their respective states. And on religious freedom, I think organizations like Chic-Fil-A, Hobby Lobby or Catholic-run schools ought to be free to follow their beliefs on various religious topics like same-sex marriage, abortion, and birth control. I guess the short version is “not enough religious freedom”, or perhaps just barely enough, and I’d like to see it protected and / or grown.
If I lived in an ideal world, I’d be opposed to birth control that creates an artificial barrier against conception.
But I don’t live in that world. I live in this one, where it’s fair to say there is a connection between birth control (more) and abortion (less), and I absolutely favor birth control.
“Religious freedom” is a new codeword. It means you can discriminate against gay people as long as you claim God wants you to. (At least it’s directed against gay people for now. I imagine once the precedents are set, God will tell conservatives to discriminate against other groups.)
No worries. I’m middle of the road re gun control and believe in the 2nd amd. I live very rural, so that may be part of it.
Bolding mine. It’s 3% of what they support. But I suspect that’s too much for you. Please don’t think they are in the abortion business though. They provide health care.
Ok. But why would you oppose it at all? Unwanted children causes everyone grief and money.
Forcing people to cross state lines to get health care.
You are arguing against yourself. That’s not religious freedom. Would you like Christion only stores? Buddhist only stores?
Chic-Fil-A, Hobby Lobby and others are FREE to express their feelings. Should they be able to refuse access to anyone that they think may not follow their beliefs? OK let them, but that business plan doesn’t seem to work to well.
It’s not just SCOTUS. There are many other appellate level nominations in multiple circuits that will be made. I heard a podcast that characterized Supreme Court nomination as the Kardashians of politics. They get all the attention unlike the other nominations but the other judgeships will have a much greater impact at the district and appellate levels because most cases aren’t heard by SCOTUS.
No, meaning he’s done a lot of business with the Russians and knows them very well. You’d have been a wow grilling suspected commies in the 50s on the House Unamerican Activities Committee. “So you admit that you did business with the Russians and knew some of them well? Gentlemen, I rest my case,”
So sex is only for procreation.

That’s correct, we don’t live in anyone’s ideal world do we? Pro-Choice folks aren’t trying to force anyone to live in their world, while the pro-birth folks are.
Welcome to Earth.
So let’s see his taxes.
And if Trump has a few (dozen? hundred? thousand?) prisoners tortured and their families put to death, well, God will sort them out. So long as gay people are reduced to second class citizens and women are forced to give birth against their will, that’s what matters.
How can you stand to even share your air with such vile specimens of the race?
You’re reading it broadly. I’m reading it narrowly. Time will tell who is right. But if they put these questions to a single senior administration official under oath I’ll eat a bug.
