Importance of lining up a new job

Ok, after reading this thread:

having received the same advice from my Dad to not quit without having another job lined up, I have a poll I want to submit:

Have you ever left a job (in this situation voluntarily) without having another lined up and how did it work out for you?

This is a point of great interest to me as I’m leaning heavily towards tendering my resignation at the end of this month without having anything else lined up.

I have never quit one job with out having another lined up.

And I’ve had several jobs over the years. One job I even quit with out giving notice. But before I quit, I called up a former employer who said I could start work the very next day.
