Important question

What do we mean when we call a question important?

Specifically? That’s purely a judgement call, isn’t it, like when I had a beeper and my GF would page me with ‘911’ to remind me to get groceries or some such thing…

Important in a personal sense or a global one? Questions which are important to me: Will I get to take my break from work on time? Will I have my paycheque by direct deposit or cheque?

Questions which are IMPORTANT: Will there ever be a cure for AIDS? How can we stop the fighting in the Middle East? Why, oh WHY, did Kraft come up with PEANUT BUTTER SINGLES???

Important means it is urgent for someone to know. The more people want to know, and the more badly they want to know, the more important the question.

I guess you could also say that if the inquiry itself strongly affected blahblah, then that wuold make it inportant too…

What a strange thing to ask.

And what a hard thing to answer; it all depends on context; “I was thinking of making some biscuits(cookies); shall I put nuts in them?” is a trivial question when my wife asks it of me, but it would be an exceptionally important question to ask a guest, who may have a severe nut allergy.

Context.
