The main reason I want my speakers on is so that my cow-orkers can tell the difference between me dancing in my seat and having a grand mal seizure*.

*although in perfect honesty, my dancing would always look like active epilepsy, so the music probably isn’t a helpful clue.

Try asking whoever they need to ask. I don’t mean in any way that would get you in trouble. Just report that users are making such a request. Any front facing business has to deal with this sort of thing all the time.

And, yes, I am assuming that hasn’t been done, as it’s the type of thing you would mention in this sort of situation, in order to deflect blame. “We’ve forwarded complaints about this sort of thing before, and nothing happened [or were told to knock it off].”

I know that Measure for Measure thinks that the staff should just keep their head low, but I propose that if this board is on such thin ice that forwarding a complaint would harm the site, we’re already doomed anyway. Such a melodramatic reaction is not remotely reasonable to this type of thing.

I would also ask that TubaDiva not insult our intelligence by claiming that they’ve never been able to do anything about noisy ads before, when I can pull up threads where something was done in the past. And that, instead of getting snippy at people for asking, you’d patiently explain that things have changed, instead of us having to drag it out of you.

TubaDiva made the OP feel like they’d done something wrong to have even reported this sort of thing, when he absolutely did not. They had a reasonable expectation (aka “entitlement” without the insulting connotations) that such a thing would be dealt with. My ideal situation would be that this should not happen.

And, yes, I’d like an announcement in ATMB saying that the staff can no longer do anything about noisy ads. It would show that the staff understands the concerns instead of trying to hide that things have changed and hope that no one notices.

I’m sure your boss would be happy to help you with this issue, make sure to tell him all about it.

I’m at a loss to explain or understand TubaDiva’s post. It was extremely rude, and especially considering that TubaDiva and Ed Zotti had both made posts that auto-playing ads with sounds should be reported and removed from the website, it’s extremely unprofessional in that light.

I think you should put up a sticky (or include it in one of the other stickies) that auto-playing ads are a standard feature on the straight dope from now on, and apologize for implying that they were always allowed.

And not applicable in the OP’s case, which was on straightdope.com as opposed to the message board.

Well, if the overlords are listening…

I’ve never used an ad block before, now I’m installing one.

Before your auto run ads = I saw your ads, some I’ve even clicked.

Now, thanks to your Oreo song, I’ll see none, click none. And hopefully never hear one either.

That your intention?

IMO she’s sounded tired of being an admin and frankly just disgusted with the whole gig for a long time now, and it is a mystery to me why she continues to do it, as it appears to give her no joy and a lot of angst. While this message board has a lot of people on it that you might well consider to be friends, the board itself is not your friend and never will be, and you don’t owe it anything, particularly if it is making you stressed out and unhappy about doing a job you don’t even get paid for.

Not that anyone asked for my opinion.

The Oreo song? Damn, why didn’t anyone tell me, now I’m gonna unblock ads from here.
