I am not asking for the actual limericks, but I am curious to know what is greatest number of limericks any Straight Doper knows beginning with those immortal words.
I’m guessing zero.
The line doesn’t scan right for the beginning of a limerick.
Only the one (and this really took digging up some memory cells):
In days of old when knights were bold
and toilets weren’t invented,
they laid their load upon the road
and walked away contented !
(circa 5th grade - ~'68)
Yep. Not a limerick.
The only verse I remember beginning with that line was :
In days of old when knights were bold
And women weren’t invented,
They all drilled holes in telegraph poles,
and came away contented.
Early 70’s.
In days of old, when knights were bold
And condoms weren’t invented,
He wrapped a sock around his cock
And babies were prevented.
I am surprised to see those other ones up there - I thought this was the only one!
love
yams!!
In the same vein:
In days of old
When men were bold
And paper had not been invented
The wiped their ass
With blades of grass
And walked away contented.
The other one I knew was already given.
Just as a piece of information, the refrain was subject to parody by 1906.
In days of old
When knights were bold
And condoms weren’t invented.
They’d wrap their cocks
Up in their socks
And hump away contented.
In days of old, when knights were bold,
And girls were not particular
You’d line them all against the wall
And screw them perpendicular
In days of old when knights were bold
and journeyed from their castles
Trusty men were left behind
Knights needed not the hassles.
They helped themselves to pig and peach
And drank from the King’s own chalice
Ah, it was a stirring sight,
These gypsies in the palace!
Into to Jimmy Buffett’s song, Gypsies in the Palace
As noted, not limericks. You want a knight-related limerick?
There once was a knight named Lancelot
Who had to adjust his stance a lot;
For whenever he’d pass
A pretty young lass
The front of his pants would advance a lot.
Post thief.
This is the one I know.
