In house wireless broadcasting?

Google searchs featuring variations of the subject keep bringing up Low Power FM broadcasting, and that’s not what I want.
Instead, imagine my computer running WinAmp, and playing a set of (fair-use) music - then imagine the signal coming out of the computer’s sound card, and into a high-tech ‘Mr. Microphone’, transmitting to the other stereos/boom boxes in my apartment on a FM frequency (the transmitter having a range of 10 - 12 metres max). Bingo, a centrally controlled multi-speaker sound system without running wires everywhere.
Somebody please point me in the right direction on this…

FM? Git wit’ the times kid. These here are the Gigahertz days. Well, 900MHz anyway.

There are 900MHz systems that do things like this. Plug base unit into stereo source. Hook up remote unit to headphones or feed into an amp. Etc.

Radio Shack product 33-1165 for a mere 119.99 (2001 catalog).

Also, RS (and others) sell a wireless CD adapter system for car stereos. Might also do what you want for a lot less. (But range and fidelity is limited.) PN 12-2051.

So go down to Rat Shack, check everything out. Find out what type of system you want, who makes it, and then buy it under the OEM’s label (possibly somewhere else). Avoid “Realistic” labelled products if possible.

I used to recommend X10 to everyone (x10.com) – they make GREAT stuff, including what you’re looking for. BUT, I no longer recommend them because they started their crappy pop-under ad campaign, so now they suck. But, they do make good stuff so if pop-under ads don’t bother you, check 'em out.

Aha, a transmitter/reciever unit is precisely what I DON’T want - the goal is to plug a transmitter into the computer, and tune the radio (in another room) to the correct frequency, and bango - wireless computer-control mixes through the home stereo system.
So obviously the transmitter unit should go from 88MHz to 106MHz, but not have enough range to ruin the neighbour’s night.
Tedster, yeah, the MP3 Stereo unit from Ramsey seems to be what I want, but that’s a little pricey for a kit. Thanks anyway.
