Yes, this is a weird hill to choose to die on. “Wetback” is a slur aimed at Mexicans specifically, according to lots of dictionaries. Arguing whether it’s a racist slur or an ethnic slur is bizarre, arguing that it only applies to people who have literally swum the Rio Grande is to ignore common practice, and using it at all may or may not make one a “racist” but it certainly makes one an “asshole”.
Which brings us back on topic: “Trump” isn’t making kids into racist scumbags. Racist scumbags made Trump what he is, and they’re also making kids just like them. If Clothahump isn’t racist, he’s certainly racist-adjacent.

I’m not one of the big names in conservative Dopers, but I am one, and I’ll chime in. This is nonsense. Racial slurs are often based on things that have nothing to specifically do with the people being targeted with said slurs: “spear chucker” could describe any decathlete, but it’s never used to describe anyone but a very specific race. The only reason someone would try to defend some sort of corner case interpretation of something like this is in order to cover up their own racism, or to rile people up while maintaining [not-actually-]plausible deniability.
