Yup, at the jail I work at we get a lot of unwanted food thrown out of the cell windows, this attracts loads of crows, magpies, and general vermin.
Consequently we often get hungry cats move in for easy pickings, stuffed-full pigeons tend not to be as wary and take off slowly.
One day a litter of moggies moved in, about 10 weeks old(never saw their mother), not much more and they proceeded to evict a pair of magpies from a nest they had used for a few years, the nest had been added to each year so it was quite large.
At first the kittens couldn’t climb the tree but they never lost their envy for the magpie real estate and eventually after a couple of weeks they made it, and this is where they made their home.
It was pretty funny walking down the yard, with cameras watching, to feel live non-human eyes watching you, four very young cats looking out over the edge of that nest, observing every move.It didn’t matter how bad the weather was it was their home and they weren’t gonna move.
Trouble is little cats become bigger cats and the squirming for limited space in the nest took its toll, the nest slowly disintegrated(it seems very odd posting about a cats nest somehow) so they became homeless.
This gave us a chance to catch them and they were duly neutered, except the Ginger tom who has since sired another litter from a differant female and he has now moved on, typical I guess, blimmin’ morals of a tomcat.
We then watched this new litter grow until they were weaned and ready to be rehomed. These are the kittens I now have, two females(I think) one male, two are grey/black strips a bit like ocelots and the other is a tortoise shell.
They took to the litter tray within minutes, constantly eat and when not sleeping do passable impressions or WWF and Exocet missiles.
One is very brave and nosy, one is very cautious but tends to be more lively, and the third is something between.
I haven’t got names for them yet, Beryl might be a good one, or Bella and Donna, the tom I could call Albert. If there had been one more I might have opted for Marge, Homer, Bart and Lisa.
I had thought of Scylla too because I admire his posting but I won’t unless he gives me the go ahead. This would lead to another name, since Scylla was at one side side of the Straits of Messina and Charybdis at the other, Charybdis is a bit cumbersome so I could shorten it to CherryB
Someone out there in Doperland can surely help me out.
Being a Luddite I don’t have a scanner, digital camera, or web site but they are damn cute, you’ll just have to take my word for it.
