You know, I’ve read most of everything you’ve written on the boards, but I still wonder sometimes as to why you refer to yourself as an atheist when you’re much more of an anti-theist it seems to me. Atheism sounds too passive for your way of thinking. Just curious is all.
Is there more than one poster named Der Trihs? Because the one described in the OP doesn’t sound like the one whose posts I’ve been reading here. He’s one of the most intolerant posters on this board.
The fact that a large, large number of people who are in his corner politically, (anti)-religiously, and culturally loathe what he says speaks volumes to me. It isn’t the right-wingers piling on poor Der Trihs, it’s all sides. Actively wishing death upon people who share and act on a different viewpoint than him speaks volumes about his ability to comprehend tolerance, and an utter inability to understand the basic tenants of a religion he loathes speaks volumes about his ignorance.
Hmm, well, while I was going to passionately disagree with the OP I see we have entered MPSIMS territory.

Der Trihs has some strange views. He expresses them in a hostile manner that pisses off many other posters and he makes some assertions that defy logic, but I guess it is good he has some fans at least.
On the other hand both poster make assertions that defy logic, sooner or later. I know I do.

I am, as I’m sure I’ve explained, of two minds about Der Trihs.
I read his posts about Sci-Fi, and video games, and I would like to get to know the guy. He seems like someone whom I could debate the finer points of Niven’s Known Space vs. Heinlein’s Future History. Not to shabby.
Then his politics come up, and I go off the rails. I have made a conscious decision to stop taking it personally, as best I can, so I am TRYING to focuse on the CS stuff.
More CS stuff, man. Would love to see it. Someone has to step into Fenris’ role.
Der Trihs is a fine representer. Not such a fine persuader, but that’s not what he seems to be going for.

I guess I have to post at least once more to ensure you all that:
A) I am entirely serious, and the number of people who have more or less agreed with my opinion should make that clear enough.
B) I am an original person, not some other Doper in disguise. I have read The Dope every day for years now, so that may be why my post sounds familiar. I’ve seen enough failed/troll posts dissected to try to avoid that fate.
C) I do agree with many of the additional qualifications people have offered. “too hostile, violent ideas, sometimes inconsistent” Nonetheless, the underlying substance of his posts is pretty representative of my opinions. And “Inconsistency” is so … well … consistent among internet message board participants (or human beings in general, for that matter) as to almost be an invalid criticism. That is also part of why I don’t post . I have been tempted to make this post about Der Trihs for some time, but the Lurker post got me to register for the day (OK month, although I will probably go back to shutting up very soon.)

Yeah, I aree with a lot of things **Der Trihs ** says, but he seems to lack the ability to understand why other people would believe something different from what he believes. It’s truly great that he has the whole religion/spirituality thing all figured out and is immoveably convinced of the rightness of his belief, but he could use some diplomacy lessons in dealing with those of us who are still struggling with some pretty important questions. My only real qubble with the fellow is his utter disrespect for those of us who have served honorably in the military, and for those who are, through no fault of their own, put in harm’s way now. Except for the bitter, somewhat immature arrogance of self-righteousness, though, he’s a pretty swell guy, and a damn fine researcher/debater.

Well, I am going to say this and let’s not be mention it again (;)): I agree with much of what Der Trihs says, but as many I am a bit disappointed at the way he says it. If her were to be, say slightly less caustic, he’d be saving me a lot of typing and I would just say “I agree with him” on a lot of things.
Unfortunately he reminds me a bit of the more caustic segment of the religious population around here, so that is definitely a turn-off.
Luckily he can at least spell and makes no egregious grammar mistakes. Because that would be the deal-breaker for me. 
This should come as no surprise, of course, but I like the OP a lot. I agree with almost* everything I’ve ever read **DT **post. No qualifications, no weaseling so the kewl kidz will still like me. I just agree.
*I can’t remember where he stands on the Draka books, hence the “almost”.
This thread seems a good place to ask Der Trihs a direct question which only just occurred to me…
(And I ask completely in earnest - no ‘gotchas’ or other hidden traps - not even any plans for a follow-up question).

It’s my understanding that you regard religion (and perhaps particularly Christianity) to be a dangerous, poisonous, highly infectious disease of the mind.
However, my memory of your general theme of posting on the subject of religion is not actual concern or sympathy for the welfare of the victims of this disease, but rather, a fair bit of scorn and derision.
This genuinely puzzles me - and I would greatly appreciate your comments and/or corrections to any of the above statements, with a view to resolving them.
