In Praise of Pole Dancing: Thai Wins Malaysian Contest

Story and photo here. Lili Ussaraporn Kosin, a dance instructor and choreographer from Thailand, won 5000 ringgit (US$1449) cash and a one-year gym membership worth 3000 ringgit ($871) in a Kuala Lumpur pole-dancing competiton. Yay, Lili! And in this contest, I see that even a male dancer made it to the finals and won third place. There you go, something for the ladies.

I see some amazing feats of pole dancing in Bangkok. Occasionally I hear this has become something of a fad in the West, with Western ladies paying big bucks for lessons. Sometimes in the bars over here, the girls will shuffle around with a bored look on their faces, but then you’ll find a true gem who can launch into amazing gravity-defying feats. This is especially true of the sporadically scheduled dance contests we have from time to time in some of the bars. There’s usually some big prize money on offer, and then you see the really good ones. I’m talking Spider-Man. I’m talking moon-walking on the ceiling while holding onto the poles.

Er, I was envisioning a different pole. Never mind.

Well, if you play your cards right, that’s always a possibility.
