I know holy relics were important in the Middle Ages but I’ve never heard of any knight actually going on a quest to find one. Was the “Grail Quest” merely the invention of writers of romances, or did it have a real-life basis?
By many accounts many crusaders were seeking the Holy Grail in the Holy Land.
These tales are so interwoven with history at this point it would be hard to point to specific knights.
If you attempt to Google search for the answer you will get too much white noise from Arthurian legend, Dan Brown psuedo-history and Monty Python references.
This might be the “cleanest” online source for the Holy Grail.

That seems simplistic in his answer. I have read in the past accounts of Nobles on Crusades publicly proclaiming they would try to bring home the Grail or the Spear or the One True Cross. Cecil appears to be dismissing this concept as fiction as the belief of these nobles were based on fiction.
I will attempt to find something on this in the next few days if no one else comes up with a cite.
