The Knights Templar came along, thinking the Ark was the Holy Grail (I don’t quite understand that part),
I believe it is due to Christ at the last supper declaring the the ‘cup’ as the new Covenant (replacing the ark).
The story’s nonsense from beginning to end. There was no historic Grail cult, any more than there’s a present-day One Ring or Elder Wand cult.
