How many people lived and worked on the enterprise. What was the breakdown of who worked where? How many people in engineering…What did they do etc. etc… Do they ever name the red shirts that get knocked off? I would like to know as much as i can about the nobody’s on TOS.
The number “430” got kicked around a lot as the standard crew complement, but like any military posting, the actual number of personnel can be reasonably expected to fluctuate. A similar 21st-century naval vessel would see its exact crew total vary month-to-month.
The nature of the TV show, though, was that there were just enough crew as were needed for each specific episode, including background extras. The writers were disinclined to give an exact breakdown because a later episode might require (for dramatic purposes) that a new department be created and a special guest star (who might never appear again) be brought in as the head of that department.
There are a number of semi-official “technical manuals” containing information along these lines. I remember the first one; it came out a few years after TOS folded. You might be able to find a copy, but it’ll cost you.
