Who wanted to know how many crew on Kirk's ENTERPRISE?

Somebody asked how many served on Kirk’s Enterprise . The answer is “around 400.” I forget where I know this from, but it must be common knowledge because a google search with “Kirk Enterprise 400 crew” turns up a number of hits. There are a few below, and they all refernce the 400 number, so it must have been mentioned somewhere authentic

(Kirk’s Enterprise was a Constitution-class starship, just like Decker’s Constellation. All such ships have a crew of about 400.)

From my dog-eared copy of The Making of Star Trek, copyright 1968 by Stephen E. Whitfield (Tenth printing, July, 1972), Page 205:

“The 430 man crew (approximately one third are females) is completely international and multiethnic in makeup.”

I seem to recall and episode where Kirk has a minor rant about being responsible…
