When ignorance fights back one should respond, not unilaterally disarm.
The usual pattern from you is to ignore even expert opinion and facts and continue as if that does not matter. Fighting ignorance does not work that way. You have to confront the cite, and if there is no good reply to it, one should learn from them as they are more likely to be the opposite of ignorance.
In the past I have found a few of those “lies” of Obama to be exaggerations, but on the whole I do not expect him to be infallible.
It has to be noticed though that right now, the page shows Obama as correct in all his very recent examples in his page and Ted Cruz (R) was just spouting a falsehood about Obama.
He’s wrong a LOT, and I didn’t even accuse him of lying, although being a politician I’m sure he knows when he’s lying and does it often.
Yet many here are inclined to trust whatever he says until it’s proven false. Strange that such respect and civility is not extended to fellow posters who are not paid to deceive for a living.
No, but his statements are accepted as truth until proven false by a large percentage of Dopers. Thus my asking what the standard is.
Am I to understand that the Straight Dope Message Board has a better grasp of the facts than the President and his advisors, thus justifying a higher standard?
I do not trust what he says regarding the NSA and other subjects, what I do get is the whiff of the old rotten conservative “talking point” of Obama being a messiah or being worshiped by most posters here.
Eternal vigilance and all that jazz, that it seems you missed from civics class.
Then it should not be controversial when I say, “President Obama is a typical politician”. yet such a statement always elicits protests from several posters whenever I say it. Saying that people believe he’s the messiah is admittedly taking it too far(although crying at his speeches? Really?) But even suggest that he’s not special and the resident Ignorance Fighters jump to his defense. Sure, they’ll concede that he’s not awesome, mainly because there’s this or that policy they don’t like, or maybe he’s not tough enough with Republicans. But even hint that he’s not truthful or brilliantly intelligent and the usual suspects have a cow.
As I have seen many times it depends on the subject and it is a gross exaggeration to claim that just by saying that “President Obama is a typical politician” you get flak, there is almost always another howler added to your “common” statements.
Being wrong consistently, and yet being forcefully outspoken on every issue DOES reflect badly on you. If you had a milligram of common sense and modesty, you might consider stepping back and, as I said, educating yourself before you proclaim your ignorance so loudly. The fact that you don’t do this is the reason why this pit thread exists.
Only to the fool who can’t admit and correct his ignorance and insists on proclaiming it from the roof tops. Then of course, people telling he’s wrong are the bad guys.
Nope.
Foreign born population in Sweden;

Germany Germany (48,731)
Turkey Turkey (45,085)
Denmark Denmark (44,209)
Somalia Somalia (43,966)
Norway Norway (42,884)
So you’re wrong again. Took me five seconds to find this information.
Dude, it isn’t arrogance on my part, it’s knowledge and a willingness to do my work and know what I’m talking about before I cite ‘facts’. Perhaps this is something you should consider. You know, that whole ‘modesty and common sense’ thing of recognizing that you don’t know everything but with a little effort, you can find the answers somewhere else. This is the Age of the Internet. All of the world’s knowledge is at your fingertips. There is NO excuse for your continued epic levels of ignorance, constantly spouting your ‘facts’ that are shown time and again to be completely and utterly wrong. THAT is moral and intellectual arrogance, son. Further proven by your insistence on defending yourself at every turn rather than admitting error and taking steps to correct yourself.
Let’s start with you proving me actually wrong. You haven’t even come close to doing that. I cited migration rates, you’re citing foreign born population. Two different things. So explain why your cite proves me wrong.
Secondly, all the world’s knowledge is not at your fingertips. There are all kinds of things that are not on the internet, or which are very hard to find. I know, because I STILL have to spend hours in libraries for some things. But even if you could find everything on the internet, linking to knowledge is not the same as understanding it. As your example shows. Your cite not only doesn’t even address the argument I was making, it doesn’t even prove the argument YOU’RE making.
It’s that kind of jumping the gun that makes your statement about me being ignorant particularly noxious. Follow your own advice and be sure you’re right before putting your foot in my ass, if you must engage in that kind of behavior.
Aannddd… I’m done. There comes a point where you realize there is nothing more to be gained from someone, and this is that point. Time to start using that little board function I try not to use.
His cite didn’t prove anything. If it’s okay to throw a hissy fit when someone is being ignorant, a practice you seem to be defending, then I’m perfectly within my rights to be angry at his demonstration of ignorance.
