In Utah, Bring Your Heater to School?

What on earth is going on in Utah? According to this and other reports the Utah legislature is in the process of running through a statute that expressly allows concealed weapons permit holders to take concealed firearms into schools. According to one guy who was on the radio it is to allow people to defend them selves for assaults and robberies in the parking lot. But someone else suggested it is in response to a rule promulgated by the U of U declaring the campus to be firearms free, if you would, a demilitarized zone. On its face this looks like insanity but there may be some rational thought behind it—anybody know what this is all about?

Um, no.

Not wanting to get involved in a gun control debate, just wishing to tiptoe in and point out that Utah Senate Bill 108 was only intended to clarify a conflict between already existing pieces of legislation, and that it already passed this spring. Your link is dated February 27, 2003–old news, sorry.
