Some of you may recall one or two threads in which I bitched about the office layoff rumor telephone game (probably posted early this summer).
Well, it finally happened. I had a strange feeling about it last night, and this morning when I left the house, I realized I’d forgotten to shave. I thought, “Shit, now I’m going to look all scruffy when they can me.”
First sign of trouble: around 9:45 this morning, I went out for a smoke and saw a guy I often see on the bus waiting at the bus shelter to go home. Then I pass someone high-up (but very friendly) from Marketing in the parking lot. “Is is safe to go in yet?” she asked me. I was like, “Huh? Why wouldn’t it be?” Her reply: “There’s going to be layoffs today.”
Then, a long managers’ meeting, in which we were all kept in suspense. Upon emerging from the meeting, every single one of the managers explained what was going on to their respective groups - EXCEPT MY GROUP’S MANAGER. This really pissed all of us off. We had to get our info by eavesdropping over cubes and finally a memo on the company intranet.
In any case, my division lost a few people, my department one, and my group (six people plus chickenshit manager) no one.
I am SO relieved it’s over.
I’m also weirded out by the fact that I just knew inside as early as yesterday afternoon that something was going to go down today.
Then again, I also knew my former, fat lazy boss was going to get the boot a week before it (mercifully) happened last year.
phew
