Saw this headline at the grocery-store checkout line: “SNIPERS: THEIR SECRET GAY LIFE & WHY IT MADE THEM KILL.”
Now, I have no idea if the snipers are straight or gay and I don’t see that it matters. Never saw headlines like, “DAVID BERKOWITZ: WHEN JEWS ATTACK” or “TED BUNDY: ANOTHER HETEROSEXUAL GOES WACKO!” Admittedly, this is The National Enquirer, but it was still an ill-making thing to come upon suddenly . . .
I was waiting for this Pit thread. I saw the same headline, and started laughing out loud. It was just so incredibly absurd. How that magazine gets away with crap like that is beyond me.
Hell, Eve, that’s nothing. A months ago, the Weekly World News ran a headline to the effect of: “Woman kicks out lumberjack hubby after Sasquatch kidnapped him and made him a housewife.”
I had meant to Pit that story headline, but I’d forgotten about it by the time I got home. I saw that headline and immediately thought “Well, that’s going to educate people around here” … most of whom actually have surprisingly light-colored necks.
Well, if I recall correctly, after the 9/11 attacks, there were a number of news stories on legitimate news stations, namely FOXNews in which it was implied/inferred that the hijackers were all gay and that was somehow one of the reasons for what they did.
They know their audience for one thing, and this kind of juicy “dirt”, real or not, sells magazines. Also they know there aren’t too many people who are going to be willing to come off as defending the snipers by attacking the magazine over this.
It’s an irrelavent accusation to make, then again what else would you expect from The National Enquirer? Same old tabloid, same old sleaze.
I’d like to find a copy of that article to find what the “substance” of their claims are, especially the “WHY IT MADE THEM KILL!” part.
Since they both embraced ideologies which, generally speaking, condemn homosexuality (nation of islam & especially rastafarianism,) perhaps they’ve got some armchair psychologist who says that that “possibly could have led to inner conflict which pushed them over the edge.” Of course, it would be hard to explain why a gay person would choose those belief-systems.
Bleh. To hell with the Inquirerer and their tiny “Nothing in this publication is necessarily true and no intelligent person would believe it anyway” disclaimer.
Oh, my god. “Latent homosexuality.” How, uh, 1959.
I also like the “Secret pipeline of al-qaeda money” that they claim:
Ummm… since he didn’t actually own a Jaguar and three homes, how are we supposed to infer that al-Qaeda was keeping him in gravy, exactly?
Oh, right, “AMI makes no representation or warranty whatsoever regarding the completeness, accuracy, currency, or adequacy of such facts, views, opinions, statements and recommendations.”
Brave, brave soul. Do try to remember that the opinions expressed in the FreeRepublic forums do not necessarily reflect those of people who live on the planet Earth.
Considering you live in New Orleans and I live In Bath Maine, I think it’s safe to say that your knowledge of my daily activities, let alone what I did or didn’t recall correctly is a VERY LARGE negative number.
And it indeed was on Fox News, specifically that Asshat Charles Gibson’s The Big Picture show.
carrot– curse you! I had to go back and read the comments myself. Yikes.
It’s kind of funny how many people there are willing to assert that the National Enquirer has more integrity than the New York Times, without even a trace of irony.
“My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look upon my (words), ye Mighty, and despair!”
“I Cut Out Her Heart and Stomped On It!” My all time fave rave Enquirer headline.
You gotta read Trust Me On This by Donald Westlake, creator of the much admired Dortmunder books. If you like to laugh, that is. Joe Bob says check it out!
