I started out posting 3 years ago after lurking for a few months and have come to love this place. The first I ever heard about The Straight Dope was while searching for a local historical figure Tycho Brahe and his silver nose. Cool stuff that. Then back before Cafe Society existed my first Thread was on how crappy the book Battlefield Earth really was. And it is too.
I’ve only met a few dopers in real-life (Magdalene and VileOrb), but have come to know a few of you a little, and hope to meet more of you in the future. Especially Scotticher who needs to meet one of her adopt-a-doper-kids.
Having a link to English speaking civilized folk (well, some of you…) has kept me sane all these years in Prague. And for that I thank you all. Maybe in the near future I can try and sponser a PragueDope, an idea inspired by Coldfire. We’ll see how work works out in the next few months, but September is a great time to visit here…Heck, anytime is a great time to visit here, so drop me a line if you are passing through.
That is a long trip. I’ve only been here a little over a year, and I’ve already hit 500 posts (counting this one). At this rate it’ll take me twenty years to break into the quintuple digits.
I know exactly how you feel Tomcat. Yesterday was my three year anniversary of being here. To me, still a youngin’ at 21, that is a heck of a lot of time.
It has been a strange trip. It’s neat to think back about how much my life has changed, and all of the cool people here. Heck, it amazes me how much the boards have grown.
Unfortunately, I haven’t met any other dopers, living in a somewhat remote area (it’s not hard to get to, just not many up here). I’m somewhat of a wallflower on these boards, so I doubt many will recognize me. Still despite that fact, I consider everybody on this board a friend, and I think that’s why I keep coming back day after day. This place just has an amazing sense of community.
Okay, I’ve rambled a bit, but let me just say congrats! I hope you stick around for another thousand posts.
First of all, congratulations ** Tomcat **, may your next 1000 post be a good as your first.
Lets see, I have about 250 to go. I should reach a thousand by July.
Sun, Prague really is a cool place to live and visit. There is TONS to do here everyday of the week. Things have definitely changed since I first came here, but it still has a certain something that makes it a wonderful experience. I recommend a week-long visit so you can catch most of the main sites. Bring a friend and/or lover and roam to your hearts content. Summer is better because it is a walking city, but winter still has a charm that makes it worth it.
