In your house

If you had a 30’ x 30’ room what would you do with it?

Me?

Well, it would have tons of sports memorabilia. A full bar, a big screen TV with Nintendo and two or three smaller TV strategically placed (I like Nintendo), satellite access, a computer (of course,) big fluffy couches and some game things like a pool table, pin ball machine and a dart area.

Of course the colors would not be your typical “manly” area since I am a chick that likes sports, it would be light and airy. The flooring would be a light oak with soft throw rugs in strategic places. And big fluff chairs (soft bean bag type poofs but big enough for most adults) and at least one recliner.

The bar area would have light tile and white/gray granite tops. Light oak as the cabinets. There would be the mother in-law type kitchette in there so during game time, we could still keep warming up (or even cooking) game foods while still watching the game.

The walls would be white to showcase the team jerseys I have and some of the unusual memorabilia I have and plan on adding.

Oh, and since it is a smoking area, an air circulation system that non-smokers could come over and enjoy the games too.

That’s what I would do.

Assuming this also includes unlimited funds, I’d turn it into a screening room.

Rows of comfortable seats, digital surround sound, big silver projection screen, alternate projection technologies (film, video, etc.), snack bar, cupholders, the whole works.

Then I’d need another 30x30 room to store all the videos, films, DVDs, and so on.

This is, of course, in addition to the three 30x30 rooms I already have for all of my books…

I would be all about having 5 or 6 computers so I can host lan parties pretty frequently. Also a 32" Sony Wega would be damn nice, with a new DVD player. I would have some couches, a bed, and refridgeerator so I could stay in there most of the time. A pool table would be wonderful also, and maybe it would be good to get a dedicated T1 line so I could host websites and get lotsa money…I have thought about that kinda thing all the time…

Two words: Sex Room.

Complete with a drain in the middle (that’s not part of the two words).

I like the idea of a function room. Have a huge, well-stocked bar on one side, a stereo system on the other, a pool table in the middle, hardwood floors and a couple of comfy chairs and bean bags scattered around. (And a picture of dogs playing poker of course!)

If I had two of these rooms, the other one would serve as one of those old-fashioned libraries, with thousands of leather-bound books on shelves that reach to the ceiling. A leather recliner and one of those trolleys that hold decanters. Oh, and one of those wheely ladders too, as well as an enormous portrait of my dearly departed wife over the fireplace.

::Kayeby stops in the middle of her description, realising that she has delved into the dark, dark world of cliches, and scurries off::

I would make my room a total relaxation space… lots of huge comfy furnature as well as lots of candles and pillows.
A place to go and get away from the stress of the world.

I would make it a library/reading room. It would be even better if it was a 1.5 story room, so you could have really tall, build-in wooden bookshelves along the walls with a rolling ladder to get to them. One end of the room would feature a large brick and marble fireplace with two large comfy chairs (one for me, one for Fierra) and some small tables. A larger 8x3 table with chairs would be nearby, so maps could be spread out, or work done. The rest of the room would feature tall, library shelves for the books. There would be two Net terminals as well, hooked up to my home network.

A small wine/port cabinet would be against one wall. Maybe a mini-fridge for snacks/ice. The room would have skylights, and large windows with many plants. Where there are not sheves on the wall, I would put my Maxfield Parrish framed reprints I have, and my original Gould bird prints.

Well, as my little kakariki is zooming over my head now, I’d go with an aviary with the following characteristics:

  • Skylight roof for the plants/trees.
  • Stream running to a fish/ampbibia-filled pool (recirculating water).
  • Water levels can vary, creating small, temporary mud flats.
  • One side of the pool is plexiglassed.
  • Next to the plexiglassed area is a small screened-in space big enough for comfy recliner. A tilted stand holds my laptop. Fill with birds and I’m a happy camper.

Well, on the east side would be a bookcase for fiction, and on the west would be a bookcase for science fiction and mysteries and on the north and south sides would be…you guessed it, bookcases. These would be for nonfiction and more specifically my business related subjects. Above each bookcase would be play and film posters of things I have appeared in. At the top of one wall (east) would be awards I have won for journalism.

In the middle of the room would be a comfortable chair (old cracked leather recliner) and facing it would be a desk for writing. On the desk would be a number of different reference books, a large-leafed plant and a globe atop which would be a cowboy hat given to me by a noted actor.

Wait a minute, I just looked around. I’m in that room. Never mind, I don’t need your room.

Everything covered in bubble wrap.

I think about this sort of thing a lot. I know, i know.

The floor would be light wooden slats with a couple of plain-coloured rugs. There would be a double bed with dark blue sheets, pillows and duvet. One wall is simply a wall of windows both so i can chill in summer and look out and feel cosy in winter when i see the rain and wind outside and know that i am safe and warm inside. The other walls are cream.

In one corner is a big dark blue comfy chair that has arms that i can swing my legs over so i can sit side-on in the chair while i’m reading (this is important). The wall opposite the window-wall is lined with bookcases with all my favourite books in. In fact, it’s a magic bookcase that generates new Pratchetts for me to read as and when i desire them.

The third wall is covered in a massive Rothko print and next to it lies a big white free-standing bathtub with ornate chrome feet. There’s a stand next to it at just the right height so i can rest my book there and choose from the wide range of cleansers, scrubbers, moisturisers, salts, and assorted smellies.

Opposite the comfy chair is a big tv that always shows subtitles (i need them). The tv sits on a desk next to a PC with the best connection possible. Next to the bed is a set of dark wood drawers that have separate compartments for clothes, games and naughty bedtime toys

Ahhhhh… one day my friends, one day.

Fran

Fill it with whipped cream clear up to the ceiling.

If I had a 30x30 room, and could do anything I wanted with it…I’d do something like Cervaise’s idea, and have a big huge room with a projector putting images on one wall.

I plan to actually do this someday, and have the Ultimate Entertainment System. It would include:

  • Sega Dreamcast (or whatever the modern variation would be.) Hell, I’d probably hook my Dreamcast up anyway, even if there was a more modern variation. Imagine playing the first level of Sonic Adventure with a huge 30-foot screen! “Oh my god! The whale’s gonna get mee!!!”

  • Playstation 2 (or whatever the modern variation would be.) It would also double as a DVD player, so I could watch big-screen DVD movies! Hell yeah!

  • PC. Just in case I feel the urge to play Unreal Tournament on a 30-foot screen.

  • 6+ speaker digital surround sound

  • No windows in the room. Glare sucks. I don’t see why in every house we’ve lived in, my family chooses to put the TV in a highly windowed area. This room would be pitch black when the lights aren’t on.

  • Lots of chairs that would be comfortable, but wouldn’t be hard to clean popcorn out of. Like, beanbag chairs or something.

One day, when I’m a millionaire, I will have this room. You just wait and see.

I would pad the walls and floor and run around like a maniac.

The Moon Room will pe painted entirely black, with stars and planets on the ceiling. Murals painted in glow-in-the dark paint will be optional for the walls. It will be furnished with fluorescent inlatable furniture and will be lit with blacklights. There will be a stereo and a kegerator.
This is obviously for parties. If I build it, they will come…

A wall of windows with a great view
A hot tub
My favorite prints FINALLY framed, matted, and hung
Comfy furniture
Fully self-cleaning - I hate to dust…

Oh, well, this is a little easier for me, since we’ve drawn up plans to refinish the basement and have put a lot of thought into what we want to do with extra space.

In one area would be a great conversation/sitting area. Big nice couch, and a loveseat. Small wet bar off to the side. All our extra artwork covering the walls. Great woodwork for trim. Couch folds out to sofabed for a guest to stay.

In the other part of the room, the wall would be lined with cabinets and a countertop/desk area. This is for crafts and tool sharpening. Lots of storage in the cabinets. Also some bookshelves interspersed. Also some chairs here, but mostly floor space for Cranky Junior to play.

I’d make it into a huge kickass kitchen, complete with a wood burning oven for pizzas and bread, some o’ those nifty sub-zero fridges that look like drawers, lots and lots of counter space, and room for people to hang out and have drinks while we cook. Then I’d invite y’all over for a big doper party. Whooohooo!

It would be purple. I may not even limit myself to one shade of purple. Muhahahhaha.*

*moi apologizes for the maniacal tone of this e-mail; she just grew up in a white-walls-only household, m’kay?

Cribbing from my post in the Furnish Your Lair thread, it would be:

  1. Floored in flagstone, if possible.
  2. Well-stocked with candles, mainly in wrought-iron holders and lanterns.
  3. Extremely well-provided with more modern lighting.

and will have:

  1. A Chair, the details of which will remain confidential until such time as I secure a patent.
  2. A kick-ass computer with all the trimmings. No desk required.
  3. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
  4. Several racks for musical instruments and attendant paraphenalia.
  5. Speakers attached to my stereo system (located elsewhere and controlled via the computer). I’m thinking electrostats, if the budget allows them.
9)My Elmore prints in nice frames.
