Incredibly common products which the store clerk never heard of

Oh, yeah. Most of those pictures in my link go to sites currently selling them.

Huh. What I sell at farmers’ market is definitely turnips.

If you’ve got enough ground to need a weed whip, you could grow your own; they’re generally pretty easy to grow. That won’t help you much if you want to eat them right now, of course.

The nice young man working customer service at Home Depo had never heard of Loctite.

Not sure, but I’ll bet Ives knows.

Yikes

I had a student that kept eliciting that “can’t fix stupid” quote from her teachers, and none of us were surprised when she dropped out. Imagine my non-shock to run into her working at a Home Depot.

So those aren’t tiny Bob Vilas in the orange aprons…

Ooh, I think I found my post-retirement calling!

Love to drive? Check.
Love to drive too fast? Yes, PLEASE!
Willing to not slow down so I make impromptu lane changes and cut off other drivers? Check.
Care if “Building Security Sorta-Cops” yell at me? Nope.
Care if rando Karens in Volvo SUVs yell at me? Nooope!
Will my wife and family testify that I can be a jerk? Check, check and checkmate. When do I start?

‘Wayne’s Coating? Paint aisle!’

Someone who grooms horses.

I’ve worked in construction, mostly framing and exterior trim. I’ve also done a ton of remodeling.

I’ve never heard the term beadboard. Had no idea what it is. Wonder if it’s a reginal thing.

Leather worker …

Yeah, never heard of beadboard. Googling a picture, I’ve seen it I suppose.

Home Depot is very hit and miss on the knowledge of employees. Sometimes they know exactly where every single thing in the store is. Sometimes they know nothing.

My wife was a “floor associate” at Home Depot when she had never lived in anything except employer or school provided housing her entire life. She lived in military or civilian government apartments, then a university dorm, then her work unit housing (effectively another dorm) and then an RA room in a dorm in grad school. She had literally never held so much as a hammer or screwdriver in her life. Not only would she now know what bead board was (and 30 years later she still doesn’t) she would have had only the vaguest idea of what most common hardware products are called. Things like Allen Wrench, Phillips Head, Flat Head, Ball & Peen, Extension Ladder, Step Ladder would all have been Greek to her (Her English was very, very, good, if you wanted to talk about literature from the 15th to the 19th centuries, or some topics in social sciences, economics, politics, criminal justice, etc.)

But Home Depot didn’t care. This was 30+ years ago. There was no desperate labor shortage. She sucked at her job, but only she seemed to care. Fortunately she was only there for a few months.

Loctite is a brand name. They make a range of different products including glue, cleaning fluid, valves and pumps. If you just ask for ‘Loctite’ I don’t blame him for not knowing what you mean.

Unless you’re thinking of a different Loctite.

Oh, don’t be ridiculous. Would you say that if someone didn’t know what a “Kleenex” was?

Um, I don’t know what beadboard is. (Neither does my autocorrect, which changed it to headboard.) Anybody want to bother to define it?

I think that’s a little different- although Kimberly-Clark* sells many different products, as far as I can tell the Kleenex brand in the US is restricted to tissues and disposable hand towels ( introduced in 2010) while all of Loctite’s products are sold under that name.

Beadboard

(I used to work in a lumber yard.)

Thank you.

In my experience, Loctite is best known as a threadlocker, and its name is almost used generically to refer to the type of product.

It’s a type of paneling. . I specifically chose a Home Depot link because the descriptions do not always use “beadboard” - this one says " Paintable Bead Wainscot Hardboard Panel", while others just say “wainscot” or “decorative panels”.

My gf runs into this with Gore. She does advertising work for the company. Everyone seems to know Gore-Tex, their line of waterproof clothing, but she deals strictly with their medical division.
