Incubus: How did I miss this band?

dalej42 suddenly got into Rush…My new (old) band fave in Incubus. I never paid much attention to them because I thought they were like Korn or ICP. Wow–So far I have “Drive”, “Megalomaniac”, and “Talk Shows on Mute” on my iPod. Any others?

Listening to the Music Choice Alternative Rock channel on my TV has really paid off!

The only Incubus I can stand is their acoustic set ( ) But then again I disagree with your assessment: I think they are very much like a watered-down Korn or Tool. Their stuff would be better as acoustic (and I’m not a big acoustic fan, but the same could be said for Matchbox 20: their acoustic stuff is better than their electric.)

I suggest “I Miss You”: one of their most powerful songs, and “Are You In”.

I always liked Stellar, off of Make Yourself.

That said, I am not a huge fan of the group, mostly because of the affected way in which Brandon Boyd sings. I just want him to shut up! The guitar work of Mike Einzinger, however, is thoroughly awesome. Very eclectic. He has one solo that I’ve always wanted to learn, but I can’t remember the song. Anyone? Great solo? Starts out with a few picked notes, then just goes crazy? Anyone?

Glad you found a new fave, Gail!

I liked Incubus a lot more before they became ultra-popular. It seems to me that most bands that make it big lose a lot of their edge. (Let’s not even talk about Sugar Ray.) In any case, you can’t go wrong with the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. cd. In a word, it’s odd. You have really hard stuff on it like “Vitamin” (my favorite song of theirs ever,) “New Skin,” and 70s-style retro like “Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song),” then the downright odd like “Magic Medicine.”

Off other later CDs, “Pardon Me,” “The Warmth,” and “Wish You Were Here” are all decent tracks too. Oh, and if you can find it, the song “Still Not A Player” that they did with Big Pun isn’t good persay but entertaining as hell.

Yep; no matter what the band, becoming popular kills their edge. Funny (and sad, really) how that works.

“Drive” has got to be their best song in my opinion, but you’ve already heard that. I like “Battlestar Scratchalatica” purely for the mixing job. “11 A.M.” is a good one too, in the same vein as “Drive”.

Incubus is really hit-or-miss with me- there’s a few songs I love, but I rarely listen to an entire album.

My thoughts exactly.

Except my favorite song on S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is “A Certain Shade of Green”. I saw them back when tis album was fairly new. Brandon had long dreads and played a djembe and digeridoo on stage. My how things have changed.

I will suggest the “lounge version” acoustic Certain Shade of Green. It’s magnificent. I do enjoy Incubus. I first saw them when I was in 10th grade. The show was incredibly energetic and just seeing Mike Einzinger…wow! I can’t say much for anything off the cd with Megalomaniac on it, but as mentioned, S.C.I.E.N.C.E is odd, in a good way. Also, check out the song Circles off of the Morning View cd.

Brendon

I’m with appleciders on this one; I usually love about 5-6 songs off any given cd and hate the rest. That ratio started higher with their early stuff (specifically S.C.I.E.N.C.E.) and tapered off to almost nothing with A Crow Left of the Murder, though there are still a few reasonably listenable songs on that one. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. is brilliant, though: check out “Deep Inside” and “Summer Romance” for sure. You should probably just buy that album and Make Yourself, honestly. The later two I wouldn’t buy again, though there are a few can’t-miss tracks on Morning View (“Wish You Were Here”, “11 A.M.”, and “Echo”, off the top of my head).
