Indestructible Basic Block

…stylish is a plus.

So, we’re looking to replace the two knife block sets that we’ve had for decades with a simple single set. Don’t need a set with steak knives, and won’t be needing the single use knives like a fillet or boning knife.

As we’re lazy, we use the dishwasher for everything, so a super high-end set that requires hand washing is right out.

=)

Suggestions from the Teeming Millions welcomed!

I prefer a magnetic strip on the kitchen wall. It frees up counter space and doesn’t trap crumbs or dull the blades.

Me, too.

Wait, are you looking to replace the knife block itself or the knives that go in it? Because my knife block is simply a hunk of wood with slits cut in it. How do you manage to destroy that? If you want to replace the knives, visit a restaurant supply store and buy the inexpensive plastic-handled knives they have there. They can certainly be machine-washed.

Yes.

We’re looking to reduce the counter space currently taken up by two blocks with a single small block with a small set of core knives (and some kitchen scissors).

If you are handy you can make your own:

For stylish, you can’t beat the Voodoo Knife Block.

I didn’t even bother with a magnet strip: I went to the hardware store and bought a couple of sets of really strong magnets about 1 in. x 2 in. and each knife has its own personal love connection to my fridge.

A magnetic strip was one of the best $20 or so I ever spent. I love that I can keep my tongs and kitchen shears on it, too.

I’m loving my new magnetic knife strip. Keeps all that “knife clutter” down (I sent all my crap knives that people have for some reason given me to the garage kitchen) and just have two chef’s knifes, a serrated bread knife, and two paring knives. Shears go somewhere else next to the can opener. It’s fantastic.

This is the knife strip that I bought that was highly recommended from Cook’s Illustrated. Just enough for a chef’s, serrated and paring knife plus shears and the whisk attachment for my hand mixer.

My mom has one of these which is basically just a bunch of plastic sticks in a thin block into which you can slip your knives. It’s very space-friendly and works with any configuration of knives.
