Indian Food: difference between Dal Tadka and Dal Makhani?

I understand that Dal is sort of a generic term for a soup/stew of lentils.

Got some Patel’s at the grocery store : two different types.

Whats the difference between Dal Tadka and Dak Makhani?

Thanks!

I believe Dal Tadka is made with toor dal, while Dal Makhani is made with urad dal. (I prefer the first one.)

Which are …?

Toor dal.
Urad dal.

Dal is an excellent vegetarian source of protein and if eaten with rice or wheat (e.g. roti or chapati), as is typical in Indian cuisine, it provides amino acids in the right proportions to make a complete protein meal (such as meat, fish, eggs, milk).

See I prefer the black peas, myself. Too many mushy-split-pea soup dinners as a child to escape a lingering sense of “god I’m poor and this is gross” altough I will say that at least they’re usually yellow split peas instead of the really unappetizing-colored green ones.

(dal/peas/lentils/whatever - they’re all peas in the Bible Belt)
