IndieWire's Top Films of 2014 (so far)

IndieWire’s Top Films of 2014 (so far)

IndieWire asked 122 critics to rank the top movies of 2014 so far and IndieWire took those rankings and made a master list.

If you go to the page and click on the movie title it will give a synopsis & details of the movie.

For the methodology, if you click on the number on the right it will give you a list of critics that ranked the movie, and their rank. If you click on the name of the critic you’ll see their ranked list of films.
These are the movies I’ve seen from the list, though some of them on the master list haven’t opened in Chicago yet. So far I’ve seen 14 of the Top 20, and 25 overall. For as many movies as I see, I miss a ton. The numbers in () are how I’d rank my top 5 so far films, but it’s hard. There’s only one that I didn’t like at all (Ida, ugh), and another that I could take or leave (Noah). The rest I thought were pretty great in varying degrees.

  1. The Grand Budapest Hotel (4)

  2. Under the Skin (2)

  3. Only Lovers Left Alive (1)

  4. Ida

  5. The LEGO Movie (didn’t expect THAT, did you?)

  6. The Immigrant

  7. Blue Ruin

  8. The Raid 2: Berandal

  9. Locke

  10. Edge of Tomorrow (5)

  11. Godzilla

  12. Night Moves

  13. We are the Best!

  14. Chef (3)

  15. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

  16. Noah

  17. The Lunchbox

  18. How to Train Your Dragon 2 *

  19. Gloria

  20. Obvious Child

  21. Child’s Pose

  22. The Fault in Our Stars

  23. The Rover *

  24. The Wind Rises

  25. X-Men: Days of Future Past

  26. Dom Hemingway

  27. Finding Vivian Maier

  • including them is a bit of a cheat, since The Rover just opened here and I won’t have a chance to see it until Tuesday. I’m planning a double-feature with Dragon 2.

Can I make my own top ten list, so far? I have to go with what was released around here this year, so far, so my list is:

  1. Noah (amazing)
  2. Adult World (hilarious)
  3. Nymphomaniac (I wouldn’t want to split them up)
  4. Tim’s Vermeer
  5. Under the Skin
  6. Vampire Academy (I so wanted to put this as #1, but it didn’t live up quite to expectations)
  7. Locke
  8. Jodorowsky’s Dune
  9. Draft Day
  10. Angels in Stardust

Definitely you can make your own list. I just realized because of your list that Tim’s Vermeer and Jodorowsky’s Dune aren’t on the IndieWire list and they should be.

I haven’t seen your 2, 3, 6, 9 or 10. I missed Nymphomanic because it played while I was in the hospital. I missed Vampire Academy because it came and went too quickly, I thought I had more time. I haven’t heard of Adult World, Draft Day or Angels In Stardust.

Oddly, both of those are on their @Criticwire top indie films of 2014 list…but I guess weren’t good enough to make the full list.

I watched Adult World the other night. I found it pretty entertaining. I thought John Cusack did a good job with his role. My wife rented Vampire Academy a couple of weeks ago. I’ll leave it at that.
