The best movies of 2024

I’m sure there are a few 2024 releases for me to see. I saw 101 movies released in the year 2024 and my top 10 is probably not really set in stone. All 10 of these are great and you can swap most of them with the movies near it on the list.

I am surprised to see how many “horror” movies are listed in my own list. It’s a surprisingly wide genre with so many different styles and types of movie and 2024 was a great year for the genre.

In the end, though…nothing could displace Furiosa.

Note: I saw Nosferatu a bit late. It would probably be in this top 10 or the 11th movie, but it did not blow me away enough to revise my list.

Here is my list:

I saw 146 movies in 2024, but about a dozen or more were not 2024 releases (for example, Le Samourai, Seven Samurai, and Zone of Interest are in that list). Of @Mahaloth’s list, I saw and really enjoyed Furiosa, Abigail, Deadpool and Strange Darling and will probably catch The Substance and maybe Heretic when they re-open during awards season (the benefits of living in a company town).

Narrowing the list to movies that moved my needle the most (so, best for me). I come up with the following chronological list:

Alienoid: Return To The Future
Shayda
Housekeeping for Beginners
A Quiet Place: Day One
Look Back
Anora
A Real Pain
Flow
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown

This list doesn’t mean there aren’t another 10 or more that just missed the cut down to my top 10. And another 10 or more that I liked a lot more than the movie deserved.*

There were a number of bad movies on my full 2024 list, but I defy anyone to find anything worse the She Is Conann.

*What was I thinking!? Per the ironclad rules of the internet, anything not on my list is dogshit. Let the flame wars begin!

I saw 158 movies in 2024 (I only logged those I watched in theaters) and these are my top 20:

Would it be too much of a burden for people to just give the titles of the movies (like in words) rather than tiny photos where it’s often not clear what film is being shown?

Furiosa was in 2024? Feels older than that to me.

  1. Furiosa
  2. The Substance
  3. Heretic
  4. Longlegs
  5. Abigail
  6. Stopmotion
  7. Deadpool & Wolverine
  8. Strange Darling
  9. Azrael
  10. Siksa Kubur (Grave Torture)

Thanks. Number eight in your initial post was one of the more unclear ones.

Yes, the little green heart button is covering the title on the poster.

May 2024

I find this link to be useful for reminding myself what was a 2024 release (it’s not comprehensive, but it definitely has all the high profile movies)

@Eyebrows_0f_Doom, was Seed of the Sacred Fig worth the time investment? It’s played forever on the Westside, which is usually a good sign, but it also smells like a “here’s an example of how life sucks, then you die”, which for a certain demographic is attractive, but I’ve seen too many similar plots that just rub your face in it.

No, I wouldn’t describe it like that at all. I thought it was very tense thriller. Bad things happen but it’s not just an exercise in misery. But it is very intense and disturbing.

My list in text form:

Sing Sing
The Substance
Conclave
Dune Pt 2
Late Night With the Devil
Memoir of a Snail
Wicked
The Seed of the Sacred Fig
Longlegs
Anora
The Girl With the Needle
The Brutalist
Ghostlight
The Wild Robot
Strange Darling
Thelma
A Different Man
Flow
Juror #2
Emilia Perez

Ohhhh “Grave Torture”! I didn’t realize that’s what the title meant in the image. Yeah that’s a good one.

The best I’ve seen among 2024 films are Winner, Coup de Chance, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Inside Out 2, It Ends with Us, Thelma, Janet Planet, Widow Clicquot, Dìdi, Problemista, The Wild Robot, Wicked Little Letters, Saturday Night, We Live in Time, Blitz, Anora, Wicked - Part I, A Real Pain, A Complete Unknown, and Ezra. These are films which are eligible for Best Picture of the Oscars for 2024. Of course, I did not see many good ones. Note that sometimes a film is released in other countries in one year but not until a later year in the U.S. Note that being shown at a film festival doesn’t make a films eligible until it gets a regular showing.in movie theaters.

I also have Joko Anwar bias, so it might not deserve its #10 spot, but I gave it that anyway since it is very good and I like almost all his movies.
