Info on Miami--help. . .

The “bad side of town” has prompted this request for info.

I’m going to have a vacation next month with a few days in Miami. I’d appreciate any info on what areas to avoid for lodging. I’m going to try to find a spot in Miami Beach, but if there’s nothing in my price range, I’ll need to look elsewhere.

Any advice???

I don’t need much: hot and cold running water, sheets that aren’t sticky, and an area that I don’t feel compelled to make mad dashes between car door and room door.

Beware… Miami is a horrible, evil place with some really putrid neighborhoods. A cheap hotel there could lead to the kind of tourist activity your travel agent never told you about…

Yer pal,
Satan

what kind of activities, like waking up in a bathtub full of ice and your kidneys being removed? I know a guy who believes that this will happen to him if he ever stays in hotels. I bet he was kidnapped by aliens as a kid or something.

I used to live and go to high school in Ft. Lauderdale, which is not too far from Miami. My prom was held in Miami at the Fontainbleau Hilton Hotel. This was about…oh…let’s see…well, nevermind how many years ago this was. At that time, there were either good areas (where the movie stars lived) or the bad areas (everywhere else). I have one memory of being in a particularly bad part of Miami, lost, and an African American cop telling me to roll up my windows, lock my doors, and get the heck out of there as quick as possible. I am not sure how much has changed since I was in Miami last. Maybe the best place to find a decent place to stay would be somewhere around the University of Miami.

Don’t know who said it, but I like it.

Simply put–Miami Beach good, Miami bad. The Fountainbleu was rennovated about 5 years ago, but it pretty pricey. There are a lot of small but nice Art-Deco hotels on the South Beach. There’s bound to be a hotel locator on the Web to help you. Start looking on Yahoo!

Read Dave Barry’s new book, Big Trouble. It basically describes Miami to a tee.
