Information on stapedectomy

My wife has suffered moderate hearing loss and her doctor has suggested that she have her stapes bone remove and replaced with one made of titanium. Later this week, she and I are going to meet with the surgeon and discuss the procedure.

Does anyone have any experience with this procedure and does anyone have any advice on the kinds of questions we should be asking at this meeting with the surgeon? Thanks.

I had it in each ear, the procedures coming about 4 (y)ears apart.

It helped; my hearing is not 100% where it ought to be (nor did anyone say it would), but I did go from moderate-to-severe in one ear to mild-to-moderate after the procedure, and from moderate to mild in the other.

The worst part, by far, was the anesthesia for the first one.

My understanding is/was that bad outcomes are rare and that most people see some benefit, though again it is far from being a cure-all.

Please feel free to PM me if you’d like more info or if you want to bounce potential questions off of me.

Thanks Ulf. The doctor is making it sound like it’s pretty routine, but I had never heard of the procedure before. I might PM you after the meeting with the surgeon to get your thoughts.
