Recently found out about this from a pro-contraception pro-life blog I follow: Help pregnant and parenting students in Detroit keep their school
I would like to think that most of us, whether pro-life or pro-choice, can agree that it is a good thing if girls who do end up as teen mothers still feel like they can have a worthwhile future. And yet it seems like the every day, real-life issues like this often get totally overlooked in all the fighting about the philosophical aspects of abortion.
It seems to me like, when the topic of unplanned pregnancy/abortion comes up, often one person goes “Abortion is murder!” and the other person goes “No, it’s a choice!” and both of them go away feeling like they’ve done their part to “help” the women and/or children affected. Meanwhile, how many people are involved in efforts to support practical help for teen moms such as this school? I would wager that most people don’t even consider what they actually can do to help make life better for teen moms and their kids. I suspect a lot of people, both pro-life and pro-choice, think to themselves that if a teen mom decides to have a baby, well, figuring out how to make it work is her problem…even though society would be so much better off if these women and children had happy futures.
[I posted this here rather than GD because I didn’t think this was much of a debate, though maybe someone will prove me wrong *shrug*]
