Not necessarily. I occasionally post to the other boards but not all the time. Thus changes that take place there can go unnoticed for some time. I only discovered last night (via the snarkboard, no less) that Domebo now has chat. I’d never scrolled down far enough to find it and had apparently missed whatever posts had been made to announce it.
Still, I’ve always thought it was very magnanimous of this board to allow promotion of the spin off boards, and if it now wants to call a halt to that I don’t see that as being unreasonable.
But, please note, at least one other Mod has said he would do exactly the same thing. So her supposed imperiousness (imperiousity?) was at least potentially reasonable imperiousity (imperiousness?).
As for you, if you don’t like how things are run here, stop coming here. I think you don’t mind it at all; it gives you something to post annoying commentary about in order to obtain attention from all and sundry. :dubious::rolleyes:
You know, I was a longtime lurker and started posting actively just before the Pit changes thing happened. the last day or so I have been wondering what these spin off boards are, and if they are worth taking a look at, because, to be frank, I don’t find the discussion level here as high as I remember it during all the lurking. In particular, I am no longer getting the sense that there are endless subject matter experts here and that is a great disappointment. Maybe there never were, but it was my impression at the time I decided to start posting.
So I for one will say that What Exit’s post here (I didn’t see the thread) comes at an opportune time for me. I suppose finding giraffe’s board is the next step (PMs welcome to let me know where it is).
I agree with this completely. If anything, I think the SDMB staff have gone well beyond what would have been allowed under more normal circumstances. They’ve been in a very tough position during this whole affair, and IMO have been very generous about letting us use the board to spread the word to others about the new sites up to this point. I think we should remember that they had no obligation to let us mention one word here.
From my end, I’d like it if anyone interested in participating in both boards could find GB, but I don’t want to be annoying about it. I have a link in my sig right now, which I display occasionally – if either the mods or the other posters here feel this is inappropriate, please let me know and I’ll remove it.
I have negative feelings about the uproar that led to the split, and I have negative feelings about people from DoMeBo returning here repeatedly to recruit new members, but I have no negative feelings towards the board itself. If y’all are happy over there, god bless you. (Plus, frankly, I’ve been enjoying the relatively low level of drama and bile hereabouts with some of the more vocal critics and complainers posting elsewhere.)
Another person’s point of view - I have no problem with the thread closing. I think allowing the announcement of the other boards was a good thing, even though in many people’s eyes the other boards were “competing” with us for customers. I think that’s great - if people don’t like this message board, they should definitely find another message board they like better. On the other hand, I agree with LynnBodoni that bumping an old thread with announcements is too much like advertising, something that is typically not allowed here.
I said this previously in another thread - the issue I have seen in the past with SDMB splinter boards is that their business model is predicated on getting members from the SDMB. But the SDMB has a built-in system for attracting new posters (new content daily on the straightdope front page, a large archive of columns on interesting topics easily found with a google search) and the other boards will have to come up with some advertising model of their own to keep the membership. I don’t think advertising at the SDMB should be their growth mechanism. And I would perfectly understand if the administration here didn’t want to allow advertising for “competing” boards.
Twix’s post summarises my views as well. I would just add that I have negative feelings about some Domebo members coming back here to continue to bitch and whine about this Board.
If this place is so bad, they should just bugger off, already. This Board is much improved by their absence. Instead, they keep coming back like a drunken relative that no-one wants at a family gathering, rambling on and shouting, spoiling it for everyone else by their rudeness and stupidity.
It was very nice to allow the thread. I was told they would never allow and I told those people that I thought they were wrong. Marley23 and the rest were extremely good about it and also realized there did not need to be harsh feeling between the boards and that many would post on all of the boards.
I won’t go into any details but Domebo at least is pursuing other methods of attracting members than the SDMB. I won’t go into details as I am sure it would be deem unseemly as it is about another board.
I had left that thread quite fallow for over a month. I have no problem with the reason Marley23 gave for the closing of it, but I also don’t think I was abusing it. The chat option seemed like something that could be of interest to Dopers to use. Is it wrong for me to post on the Dope and the other two boards? Should I cancel the Jersey Dopefest as I mostly post on the other? I still have quite a few friends here and I still like the place and I was very glad to see some changes take place in the last few months to improve it.
Please don’t confuse my one post after over a month with an advertising campaign.
Which had nothing to do with this thread. I don’t bitch and whine about this board and I am still a member. So why don’t you put away your broad brush.
I agree. The operators and staff of the splinter boards have, as far as I have seen, not been the folks who behave in the fashion described. I will note without further comment that we’ve got a bit of that stuff going on right now, but it’s got nothing to do with What Exit? or his thread.
IMO, yes. Most people here know about the other boards. If they were interested they would check them out. Posting about new features is advertising. Nothing wrong with that, but inappropriate here, IMO.
You’re welcome to set up a thread promoting a multi-board fest. I’ve done it several times, Rue did the same, and it’s okay because you’re involving SDMB members for an SDMB-related gathering.
You may not have intended for it to appear that way, but an advertisement is what your update was. Basically, these threads are a one time, staff-approved, limited exception to the anti-advertising rule–which is why we limit updates to the threads to one bump. Once the thread sinks, that should be the end of it unless the OP wants to request another exception. This helps us keep control so users aren’t plagued by once-in-a-while advertising updates for other sites. (One may not seem like such a big deal, but get enough updates for other, older threads and the annoyance factor grows.) It’s why you don’t see announcement threads for Opal’s board, mine or Una’s each time we update or add features. Once the original introduction thread was done, that was pretty much it.
Thanks, I wasn’t serious about the Dopefest, I knew the answer to that question. I just didn’t think Arnold’s logic made much sense.
The explanations from Marley23, Lynn (in this thread) and yourself all make sense. It was the original note in the thread that did not make sense to me.
I asked my question and it was answered and answered very reasonably and clearly. Again, just my Thanks for letting me start the thread in the first place.
To be fair, please feel free to close this one anytime you like, once I saw and accepted Marley23’s answer the rest was just an interesting(?) hijack.
Gfactor, thank you.
(I would like to state that I have never planned to leave the Dope and still enjoy it, I just post and read a lot less. That is probably a big relief to some.;))
