There is a pet door going from the kitchen into the garage. The pet door is big enough for a big dog, but only the cats use it. It came with the house.
Eventually, I will probably replace it with a pet door just big enough for the cats. In the meantime, is there a cheap but effective way to insulate it for a few months?
It’s a single plastic flap.
The only idea I’ve had is to nail a blanket over it, letting it drape over the hole.
There is no better place for the litter box than the garage, so closing off the pet door won’t happen.
the blanket flapped over is probably the best option. I’d try to find a scrap of denim fleece and sew a couple layers of it together to make it thicker. It will help seal the edges of the pet door while still leaving it functional. Main problem would be the fabric getting caught in the pet door as the cats go back and forth.
Do you use the garage door yourself much?
What about creating sort of an airlock, a tiny room just big enough to maneuver the door, out of a big sheet of plastic or a bed sheet tacked to the ceiling and walls?
We use the door a lot. The insulation should cover the pet door only. I think hanging some kind of material might work, but I don’t want to nail the material to the door. I was thinking of a big clip of some sort nailed to the door where the clip holds the material in place. That way, I can wash the material if I need to. Thoughts?
Maybe I could saw a couple of clip boards down and hang those or hang a couple of potato chip clips.
