Question for any Jewish Mumpers and readers ---- I saw something today I can’t figure out or Google-fu. There were several men (30-say 50 years old) with their hair trimmed and dyed to make it look like they were wearing a yamulka <sic?> when they weren’t. And they were in a more religious form of attire and not straight street clothes. This strikes me as not being close to (pardon the expression) kosher - some sort of religious contradiction in terms. Can anyone fight my ignorance on just what the heck I was seeing? This was before dinner and I was stone cold sober.

Paging Rosie. Paging Rosie.

That doesn’t sound like anything with which I am familiar. What makes you think they were Jewish? What did the garb look like?

If they were Hassidim or Lubavitcher, they’d have had peyot (those curly sideburns), and have been wearing black suits with white shirts, and wide brimmed hats. For those sects, yarmulkes are are only visible indoors. This also goes for the rebbi (learned leaders) of the communities, although they’d also have bushy, sometimes unkempt, beards. Orthodox and some Conservative Jews wear yarmulkes indoors and out, and otherwise dress “normally”. Reform Jews and Reconstructionists (sometimes called “Jews for Jesus”) do not have any distinguishing garb outside of synagogue.

It has always been my experience that Converts know more about Judiasm than most run-of-the-mill Jews. How come you didn’t know the answer?

BTW, there’s a whole different set of rules for Hassidic and Lubavitcher women.

Don’t say, How come", say, “How does it come to pass that.”

Well, what do you know, I finally got the last word!

No you didn’t. :stuck_out_tongue:

Did you know that you are posting in last week’s MMP thread? :dubious:

Annoying you, yup! (but that’s easy)

Yes, Rosie, Doggio, & I are all well aware of that fact; we’ll stop right after you do. :stuck_out_tongue:

Much the same as other groups wearing the usual yarmulke; black pants and white shirts mostly. A couple had what I call prayer curls and most beards but reasonably trimmed. Most of the women and kids were very conservative dress/overdressed (think 1950s) by American standard. I actually didn’t catch that the “beanies” were fake/false/painted on until I happened to be really close to one guy. His hair looked artificially white and the “cap section” slightly raised and dyed jet black. When he rejoined his party I could see all 6-7 men were basically the same although some of the hair was more naturally colored except for the black of the yarmulke.

If I see one of them again, I may just have to ask. Thought about trying to get a pic but that seemed really rude. And there was this vibe off them all like “Do not approach”. But ------------- me being me ------------- given a second chance all bets are off.

No ------------- just what day is this now?

Hell if I know.

I’ll give you a hint its time to be posting in the new MMP.

So go post.
