I have taken prozac for years for a rather annoying panic disorder. I also take zomig as needed for the occasional migraine. I know that many doctors won’t prescribe them together, but mine does. She feels that the small amount of zomig once in a while won’t cause a problem with the prozac.
Sunday night, I had a BAD migraine. I took a zomig and planned to spend the rest of the night in bed. 2 hours later, my head was still splitting so I took another zomig. My doctor assured me this was okay when a headache won’t go stop. I go to sleep.
Monday morning I wake up in agony. My whole body is completely stiff and HURTING. I’ve had milder versions of that as a side effect from zomig before so I get up and get dressed for work.
Monday afternoon I’m staring at the computer screen at work when I start to feel funny. I felt detached from my body, like I was floating in the air. Suddenly, my eyesight became BIZARRE. There is truly no other word for it. I couldn’t focus my eyes or look at any one thing. Everything I looked at spun like I was looking through a kaledoscope. I stood up and walked to the back room, banging into doorways and walls as I went. Seriously, I looked like I was walking through a ship during a storm. I sat down on a chair and waited until it passed. It took about ten minutes to be fully gone, and I was shaky for the rest of the day.
I know zomig and prozac can interact badly with eachother, and I’ve googled it repeatedly, but all I can find is stuff that states that they can interact. I know that. What I want to know is WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED???
In fact, I saw my doctor just yesterday about trying one of the triptans such as Imitrex, Zomig, or Maxalt for my migraines. He checked possible interactions with my antidepressants, and said there was a risk of serotonin syndrome. I got an NSAID instead.
I had a bad medication interaction when a V.A. doctor put me on Paxcil combined with Buspar. It made me so confused and disoriented that I was out of it (unable to work or perform basic functions of life) for a year afterward!
Dunno if she’s planning on posting to this thread again, but Aliasdid go to her doctor today. She was diagnosed with serotonin syndrome, as scott evil suggested; the doctor said that there wasn’t much to do but wait it out. I think all of the really evil side effects have passed her by, and she’ll probably be all right in another day or two.
And I have to agree with Czarcasm - it’s good to have the PDR around to know what side effects and interactions are associated with particular medications, lest you be blindsided, but it doesn’t give you the knowledge, experience, and training that a doctor has. It’s good to be aware of what could go wrong, but you should never stop medication or alter dosage without consulting a doctor first.
