TG4 the Irish launguage channel is currently running a great series about the 1916 Rising. It’s a 7 part series. Each episode covers one of the signatories of the Irish Proclamation of Independence

The first episode covers Tom Clarke the architect of The Rising. It’s in Irish but has subtitles. The recreations are in English though as that’s what the spoke.

Lots of stuff from the States as well in the episdoes so far. The leaders had very close connections with the irish American groups and some lived there for a while, in fact Clarke was a US citizen at the time of his execution.

It’s a great show. The Tom Clarke episode is up in 5 parts on youtube. Part 1
All of the 3 shown so far are up on the TG4 site but I don’t know if you can view them outside Ireland.

Looks interesting. It’s watchable in the USA, at least from my computer.

Thanks for the link. I started watching the first one, and it sounds like they’re using George Fenton’s soundtrack to The Wind that Shakes the Barley…good choice.

Cool. Usually on TV sites these things are locked down by IP. Good to see that this one is open to all.

The 3 shows that are up so far are: Clarke, Connolly and Plunkett(all of these shows are spit in parts as well for some resaon).

It’s shown on Weds night so every Thurs for the next month there’ll be a new one.

A little bit of extra stuff with regard to Clarke.

After their arrest the rebels were brought to outside the Rotunda hospital at the top of O’Connell Street. Here a British Captain Lee Wilson had Clarke strip down and insulted him in front of some nurses. A young Michael Collins saw this. All of the rebels looked up to Clarke and held him in great esteem. Collins later during the War of Independence found out that Lee Wilson was now with the R.I.C (Royal Irish Constabulary) and ordered that a team go find him and take him out. He was.

About 10 years after that his wife donated a painting to the Jesuits. It hung on a wall till the 90’s when it was sent to be cleaned. It was found then to be The Taking of Christ by Caravaggio.

I was in Kilmainham Gaol on Monday there, if you haven’t toured it before Yojimbo I recommend it wholeheartedly. I’m gonna watch that doc now, thanks for the link.

Been there many times. The Stonebreakers Yard always puts a lump in my throat.

Yeah I can’t believe I’ve made it to 28 without getting in to see it. It was kind of embarrassing how emotional the whole thing made me feel. The museum there is class too. I was verily impressed by the way it is presented and run.

I was just googling and found this.

Is this something you could watch with very little knowledge of 20th century Irish history, or should I do some reading first?

You may not get the full context or know a few names but they are docu’s about the men’s lives up to and including their death so you can follow it easily enough I’d reckon.

The whole series is now up on youtube.

The first part is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wB22H9cXgVg)
And on the day that the details of our loss of financial sovereignty are hitting home I will also link to the final few minutes of the Éamonn Ceannt episode as it addresses current day events versus the sacrifice the men and women of 1916 made.

There’s an Irish-language channel?

Awesome. And I’m checking it out.

Imho it’s the best channel aired in Ireland. Irish language shows + plenty of middle to high brow matter and saucy european films.

I would prefer to watch on the TG4 site, as there are fewer breaks.
As far as I can tell, it’s only the three most recent episodes available there- though, I’m having a difficult time trying to navigate the site because I don’t read Irish.

Can all 7 episodes be viewed on the TG4 site? Or do I have to go to YouTube?

I didn’t at first see that the OP was dated the beginning of October. I read

and followed the link and found three episodes, thinking they were the three referred to by yojimbo. Then after watching what I thought was the “first episode” about Patrick Pearse, I realized yojimbo said the first episode was Tom Clarke.

I was confused for a while because the link from the OP does still show three episodes, and yojimbo said the link would have three episodes. I took some time for me to figure it out.
Anyway, I liked watching the Patrick Pearse episode on the TG4 site. If it is possible, I would like to watch all 7 episodes on that site. If someone can better navigate the site any provide me with a link to archived episodes, I will appreciate it.

As far as I can see they only have 3 of the episodes still available on the TG4 site. They only have shows online for a certain amount of time before they take them down alas.

Thanks, An Gadaí.
Bummer.

Yeah. They seem to age of the site after a few weeks. Only the most recent ones are there which is a pain. I can’t see any archive section.

When I’m at my parents, and I have time to indulge in cross border cultural exchanges (dual standard TVs, one and four fifths the channels, for the same cost as a normal TV :D) I’d tune into TG4 if I was to tune into anything broadcast from the south/west.

What documentaries I catch on Ireland itself usually seem a bit more interesting that what’s on RTE 1 and 2 (there’s no Network 2 any more!).

Excellent series. Too bad it’s on TNG a channel I am mortally opposed to.
