Interesting little historical "How Stuff Works" firearms quiz - 30 questions

30/30. As much about pop culture as it was guns.

23, and I never fired a firearm in my life

You never had a hand in sale or manufacture of firearms? How about sale and manufacture of ammunition? How about working for monthly gun magazines and similar publications?

None of that. But I read books and play shooter videogames!

29/30. Got the Dirty Harry Gun wrong.

28/30. For a committed pacifist, I sure know a lot about guns…

25 of 30

28 right. Missed the Glock not being the first “plastic” gun, and the Chinese hand cannon. Never heard of that one.

Though I would like to see Bond using a Gatling gun.

29/30. never heard of the ‘Davy Crocket’. After my time probably.

25/30 mainly from watching movies and TV.

25/30. And what? Half of the questions are only tangentially about guns.

Not mentioned is the fact it was asdangerous to the launch crew as the target.

I got 27 out of 30, not bad. I did get the plastic gun question wrong but I did know about the Davey Crockett, so that’s nice.

With the Davy Crockett likely to its users, the Army might as well develop a nuclear hand grenade.

I scored 21. Not bad for someone who has always lived in a country where guns are very uncommon. Other than clay pigeon shooting as a kid (when the instructor was taking the weight of the weapon) I’ve never seen a firearm up close; the closest would be standing near to armed police at airports and the like.

14 for me. I can be the baseline score for someone who really knows nothing about guns.

I Winchestered. (30/30.)

I recall Bond carrying a .25 Beretta until a reader wrote to Fleming about it.

  1. Gun wasn’t loaded 3) Gun didn’t fire. That is sort of the same answer.

26 out of 30.

I figured the US military would issue a modified version of the regular gun the other troops use for ease of supply and maintenance so, regardless of what a sniper might want, they would be firing a semi.

But nope, it’s a bolt action.

Nitpick: a DMR is not a “sniper rifle.” A sniper may use one, but they are more likely to use a dedicated platform, which are more likely to be bolt. In the past people also used M14 based rifles.

It looks like the M24 is/was replaced by the M2010. Wow, that’s a hideous rifle.
