So every once in a while someone signs up for the Dope, makes a single post, and is never heard from again. Sometimes it is to start a new thread that leads to hundreds of replies, sometimes it is to bump a thread from years ago. But they have enough passion in their single post to make up for the lack of quantity. An example (inspiring me to start this thread) is this one-and-done here that was quoted in a two-year bump by another new poster, who will also likely turn out to be a one-and-done.
Oh gimme a break – if I had a nickel for every Tom, Dick or Harry who comes around claiming he invented the pause symbol I’d be driving a gravy train down easy street to lie in a bed of roses.
I dug back up one of the posters I was thinking of. I ran across this thread from 2012 for some reason or another a few months back. “computerology” posts a rant that leads to 207 posts but never shows up again after that first post.
(There is another one that I haven’t been able to re-find so far, poster comes up with a question on religion or evolution in GD IIRC, leads to hundreds of replies, never shows up again.)
He was a member for ten years before making his first and only post. And his post in it’s entirety was: Fuck you Pandora ![in the thread title]. Dicks! [in his OP].
I remember that guy because I spent quite a bit of time looking for Ampex machines that had that pause symbol, and didn’t find any. So although he had dropped the name of a lead engineer at Ampex at that time, and his post had other plausible details, he was clearly B.S.ing.
Not necessarily the same thing, but I remember the poster who came around in the summer of 2012 (maybe 2011) who claimed to be a paraplegic woman, but some of us here did some investigating and discovered it was someone who trolled various message boards with the same premise. I remember the catalyst of it was that someone used her user name to claim she died, but then she came back and said her brother was playing a sick joke or something like that. It was this event that tipped the scales on the fraud because it had been done multiple times before.
