Interesting podcast conversation between Sam Harris and Charles Murray (of "Bell Curve" fame)

I *have *noticed that. There’s a bit less of it now **Starving **is gone, and **Scylla **seems to have flounced (let’s hope that lasts), but someone is always there to take up the slack. As it were.

Hi. Just came back from a relaxing weekend, thanks for asking.

Yup, just another Monday…totally chill.

This thing someone tweeted at me is pretty funny:

To sum up:

Racist Shithead A: “You do know hispanics and blacks have lower iqs and vote Democrat surely?”
Racist Shithead B: “On average, yes—and I already made that clear:”

The twist is that racist shithead B is SlackerInc. Jesus, dude, what the ever-loving fuck is wrong with you?

I am certain that nearly all of you will love what Rebecca Traister had to say on the latest podcast: https://twitter.com/samharrisorg/status/1059499902323970048?s=21

You might even come away with a better opinion of Sam Harris.

I also recommend reading the responses on Twitter and getting enjoyment, as I did, from all the “red pill” types losing their minds.

Shut the fuck up, you racist shithead.

 Never mind that the whole Twitter subthread was about me arguing that liberals, if you control for race, are higher IQ than conservatives. That “shithead” missed that I had acknowledged you need to control for race, and thought he (gotta be a “he”, right?) had checkmated me. I just thought that was kind of funny, all things considered. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks ever so much for that valuable contribution to the discourse. :dubious:

I’m going to pass on that episode, as interesting as the subject matter may be. While browsing I happened to listen to that woman talk with Ezra Klein for over an hour not too long ago. Rebecca Traister: Women's rage is transforming America | The Ezra Klein Show - YouTube

She spoke of emotions like anger, but never said anything about intelligent recognition of our emotions or of the wisdom in how one might publicly choose to express anger.

I don’t value this woman’s perception much because she went on and on about white men in the context of how normalized their tactics to acquire power are. She came across as having a lot in common with her targets of criticism. Imagining a world where everyone begins on a more even playing field, my starting point would be not to trust her.

As I say, I don’t always agree with her—but I think she makes a better case for that perspective than do most of her “fellow travelers”. I wouldn’t want her to be in total charge of everything, but I think her perspective is valuable.

Great. This thread is the proof that ignorant bigotry is not going to be defeated by reason or facts, because it does not exist in the universe of reason or facts. This thread is not a debate, it is merely another example of the tactic stupid racists have always used every time they lose the actual argument, which is every, and in this fairly young country alone has happened at least twice on a national level. Basically, first assert your claim of racial superiority without evidence(consider slavery), and lose, then, after an interval, use pseudoscience (consider Gould’s The Mismeasure of Man to force the issue again, and when that fails, to find other pseudoscientific endorsements of racism (consider, guess what, The Bell Curve), and when that pretty much instantly fails (see, oh, any of the articles written by real scientists), they wait a while and then try to go back to first principles again, just “asking questions,” as if they don’t already hold all the answers they’ll accept, in the hopes that their empty arguments will hold more water this time.

This argument is over. Education has been provided, and therapy offered. Good people at this point will turn their efforts to simple, effective behavior modification.

The king has issued his edict! What are those, thunderbolts? Stone tablets?

…thanks ever so much for that valuable contribution to the discourse. :dubious:

SlackerInc, you remain an excellent argument against the principles you hold dear. You are proof that, in a rational arena of competing ideas, good ideas have no guarantee of winning.

You didn’t learn that in 2016? I’m white-knuckling it all day as I give DFLers rides to the polls. BTW, I hope the Americans in this thread are making a plan to vote if you haven’t already. No matter how many mean things you say to me, I appreciate you guys today, because I have faith that you will be voting for sanity and decency and an “end of the beginning” of our collective national nightmare.

SlackerInc has a, well, not a thought, quite, but certainly an unearned conviction that his beloved racism could certainly prevail if the majority of folks can just be exhausted into (“Just once, please, spirit of Lester Maddox!”) failing to provide the clear, obvious and true debunking of bigotry, by simply dragging the argument backwards over and over (and in this case, over and over and over again) in the hope that their pleas to “just define for me please, what is this ‘race’ you speak of?” won’t be seen as the stupid, racist distraction that the worst of us hope for. These people are not susceptible to facts or reason or in fact basic moral precepts. They just want to put off the final victory of decency, and in this case, some schmuck is willing to drag us back a quarter-century to achieve it. He’s losing badly, and good, but don’t think for a moment he’s not trying to leverage this into a more prominent position in the world of stupid bigots. Don’t let him. And consider again: after reality and therapy fail, behavioral modification works, at least to protect the rest of us.

King, nice rant, but you’re ignoring some salient facts like my vehement opposition to Trump and the GOP, my support for reparations for slavery, for increased spending on programs that benefit black people, and my general positive view of African Americans as crucial political allies. None of that remotely squares with your dark intimations, so you ignore it and make me into a strawman you can knock down.

The OP’s so-called “salient facts” (evidence of which would be welcome here so the right-wing websites he hopes someday to be paid by can have full disclosure of his godless liberalism before they waste their money on an easily-debunked, um, sympathizer), are unknown to me. And none of it, even if both true and uncontradicted by his/her other posts, which I have no interest in reading and which no other poster here seems to have remembered, contradicts a single thing I’ve said. I’ve known plenty of people who generally voted right, said some more or less correct things, and somehow avoided using slurs, all the while never actually believing, really, that the various races and religions and sexes we have were really equal. These people thought they were somehow the benefactors of a lesser species, and their attitudes were just as wrong and poisonous and in need of extermination as those of any 1850s Alabama planter. And they’re just the clowns who still think The Bell Curve has any meaning anymore.

And, dragging Trump into it is kind of a tell, you know? Strawman? You’re not that tough.

“No one seems to have remembered”? I have been posting here for over a decade. No one who has posted with me on political threads can honestly describe me as anything but a very partisan Democrat, albeit one who strongly opposed Bernie in the primaries in the last presidential election.

You just got caught flatfooted lazily making assumptions about me, and you are backpedalling furiously while claiming not to be.

This just makes you weird. It doesn’t make certain opinions of yours less racist. I’m glad you’re not as bad as Trump or Klanners and Nazis. But there should be a higher bar for decency.

Once again, racism does not require hatred. It never has. Even slavery didn’t require hatred. The lack of hatred tells us nothing about you.
